[00:00:00] Speaker A: It is now disclaimer time.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: We are here to share Prince's works with the utmost authenticity, clarity and precision. This means there may be situations where the material being discussed may be sensitive or offensive to some. However, we have chosen to discuss his work as it was initially produced. We will not alter any of his original work to suit anyone's comfort, including our own. This podcast is to celebrate Prince and his works.
[00:00:29] Speaker C: Thank you for your support and understanding. Now onto the show.
[00:00:35] Speaker D: Hello. Welcome to Alphabet podcast for the Prince songbook. There are hundreds of songs to choose from. You have chosen a truly unto you.
[00:00:46] Speaker A: I'm ready.
[00:00:47] Speaker B: I'm ready.
[00:00:50] Speaker A: That's what I wait for.
Welcome back to another episode of Alphabet Sweet podcast. I am your jingling host, Timothy Jingling.
[00:01:01] Speaker B: You got something between your legs that are. I'm jingling, baby.
I'm your co host, Pat. And I'm producer Aaron Roggon.
So what are we talking about today?
Host Timothy.
[00:01:16] Speaker A: I adore I. You.
[00:01:18] Speaker B: Oh, say this.
Say the sweetest things to me.
[00:01:26] Speaker A: So adore it is.
[00:01:28] Speaker B: Adore.
[00:01:32] Speaker A: Um.
[00:01:33] Speaker B: Um. Yeah, just, um.
[00:01:36] Speaker A: Yeah, I was gonna get right into my notes, but I want to, you know, not do that yet.
[00:01:40] Speaker B: You can do that.
[00:01:41] Speaker A: Can I? Sure, yeah, absolutely. I don't wanna say no background on it like Spike Lee.
[00:01:45] Speaker B: We're gonna talk about it.
[00:01:47] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:01:47] Speaker B: I mean, whatever you want to do, we're gonna. We're gonna talk about it no matter what.
So however you wanna do this, you're the host. I'm just. I'm your sidekick.
[00:01:58] Speaker A: You're my Robin.
[00:01:59] Speaker B: I'm the Robin to your Batman.
[00:02:05] Speaker A: I tell you.
When did this song come out of? 80.
[00:02:11] Speaker B: It came out in 87.
[00:02:13] Speaker A: 87?
[00:02:13] Speaker B: Yep.
Do you remember back then?
[00:02:18] Speaker A: I do.
[00:02:19] Speaker B: Do you?
[00:02:20] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:02:20] Speaker B: How much do you remember?
[00:02:22] Speaker A: It wasn't as good as the, you know, 85. You know, that was a great air, you know, Super bowl shuffle.
[00:02:28] Speaker B: Let's not talk about that, you know, killed that one.
That's been done way too much.
[00:02:33] Speaker A: 87 is.
[00:02:36] Speaker B: Thank you.
[00:02:40] Speaker A: You got too much control over there.
[00:02:44] Speaker B: Yeah. So 87.
[00:02:47] Speaker A: So since 1987, I have had to listen to this song.
I don't like it. I've never liked this song ever.
[00:02:58] Speaker B: Really?
[00:02:59] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:02:59] Speaker B: And still don't.
[00:03:01] Speaker A: No, I was upset. I had to listen to it again.
[00:03:03] Speaker B: Really?
[00:03:04] Speaker A: Yeah.
The words are fine, but he screams and he screams and he screams. What the hell are you screaming for, man? No, I don't like that.
[00:03:16] Speaker B: He's screaming for love.
[00:03:18] Speaker A: No, he can scream for whatever he wants, but it's just horrible. I didn't like that. I don't know.
[00:03:25] Speaker B: I'm sorry.
[00:03:26] Speaker A: Yeah, but it's me, you know, it.
[00:03:30] Speaker B: Was one of the ones, I will say right now. It was one of the ones that I did not like the first time I heard it.
However, I do like it now.
[00:03:39] Speaker A: I'm sorry.
[00:03:42] Speaker B: Sorry for what?
[00:03:43] Speaker A: That you like this song.
[00:03:45] Speaker B: Are you serious?
You're trying to rip on me for my musical taste now?
No, but you just did.
[00:03:55] Speaker A: Wasn't intended. I apologize. Remember, I adore you.
[00:04:00] Speaker B: Yeah, I like the song. You know, you would.
But, I mean, so a little background on it. I. It was originally entitled a door and then in parentheses until the end of time, which makes sense.
[00:04:17] Speaker A: I don't think that's parentheses, though.
[00:04:20] Speaker B: That is parentheses.
[00:04:22] Speaker A: Is it?
[00:04:22] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:04:23] Speaker A: Is that what that's called?
[00:04:24] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:04:24] Speaker A: What is this called?
[00:04:26] Speaker B: Quotations.
[00:04:26] Speaker A: Quotations. Okay, my fault.
I wasn't really.
[00:04:31] Speaker B: Those are air quotes.
[00:04:32] Speaker A: Air quotes. All right.
[00:04:34] Speaker B: No, it's. Yeah, it was originally called a door until the end of time. And there's actually a couple versions, unreleased of a door until the end of time. An instrumental and a regular one that I can't find. I don't have.
[00:04:48] Speaker A: Really?
[00:04:49] Speaker B: Yeah. You would have thought I'm something like that. I would have had it in everything I had. But I searched and searched and searched. I even searched the Internet and I couldn't find it. So either I'm not looking in the right place or I'm just stupid. But, yeah, but yeah. It was done back in 87.
It was actually late 86 when he recorded it.
But it's got Eric Leeds, which is surprising. Why, you don't like it?
[00:05:26] Speaker A: I'm sorry?
[00:05:27] Speaker B: Yeah, he plays sax, of course. You know, a couple other people. Atlanta bliss, which he's great, too. On the trumpet.
[00:05:35] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:36] Speaker B: And someone on the viola. Novi Novag.
[00:05:39] Speaker A: Novi.
[00:05:40] Speaker B: Which I have no idea who that is.
[00:05:43] Speaker A: Where you see that at?
[00:05:45] Speaker B: In recording personnel.
So.
Yeah.
[00:05:54] Speaker A: What is that, like Russian?
[00:05:55] Speaker B: Don't know.
But there is a live version of it also on one night alone, live, which I thought, again, I liked.
[00:06:09] Speaker A: Is it the same, like, way he's screaming at me?
[00:06:13] Speaker B: Yeah, he's screaming at you. So what was hard for me to find was there is a version that was four minutes and 50 seconds long that was only done on a. The cross promotional single in a weird country.
I could never get that. It was so expensive. I just wasn't gonna pay money, you know? But when they released the sign of the times, the single set, they included it on there. So finally I was able to get that version of it, which was sweet. Yeah. Which still, I mean for that box set you still pay out the ying yang.
[00:06:47] Speaker C: Novi is an american, by the way.
[00:06:50] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:06:51] Speaker B: Is it a male or female?
[00:06:53] Speaker C: Female.
[00:06:54] Speaker B: Female. Novi Novag?
[00:06:55] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:06:56] Speaker B: Huh.
[00:06:57] Speaker C: Born in Hollywood.
[00:06:58] Speaker A: Hmm.
[00:07:00] Speaker B: So if you're from California, are you still american?
I'm just checking because they like to sit them in Texas, set themselves apart so much, you know.
[00:07:12] Speaker A: You ever notice anything?
Well, not everything, but a lot of things I have gotten and I'll look at it and I'll say it's like cancerous and known to in California or whatever. You ever seen that?
[00:07:31] Speaker B: No.
[00:07:32] Speaker A: You've never seen this?
[00:07:33] Speaker B: I don't really.
[00:07:34] Speaker A: Warning.
[00:07:37] Speaker B: I know California is like, no, he's gonna check his.
[00:07:40] Speaker C: It's prop 65.
[00:07:42] Speaker B: Is that what it is? So what is prop 65?
[00:07:45] Speaker C: It's just a warning label on a whole bunch of stuff that says in California they found it to cause cancer. Yeah, or something like that.
[00:07:52] Speaker B: Really?
[00:07:53] Speaker A: And it's a whole lot of things.
[00:07:56] Speaker B: Yeah. Well I. That must be what. Cuz they're like, California is getting rid of like all the food coloring now the food dies, all the, the red number fours and all that stuff. Yellow. They're getting rid of all of them.
So that's not a bad thing. I mean, get rid of the stuff. I mean, there's a lot of stuff we use in our country that they don't use. It's banned in other countries.
[00:08:22] Speaker A: So does this mean that like Californians are smarter than the rest of us? Because.
[00:08:28] Speaker C: No, you just only get cancer if you use it in California.
[00:08:31] Speaker A: Oh, that's it.
[00:08:32] Speaker B: Okay, so we're fine. Yeah, we use it here, we're not in California. We're good.
[00:08:37] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm not going there anyway, so.
[00:08:41] Speaker B: So yeah, and there was, there was a, I mean, there was a good amount of covers and samples.
There is a sample trina Tamara did edited into one of their songs. There's a guy named Johnny Rain, he added in one of his songs.
Those were the samples, Carmen sampled it and all that.
[00:09:13] Speaker A: Dude, I was interacting with the.
[00:09:16] Speaker B: No, you were like, I was playing peekaboo with the people.
[00:09:19] Speaker A: Yeah, cuz you ain't looking at him. So I'm playing peekaboo make, you know, we're part.
[00:09:26] Speaker C: Just a quick little side note, this is not the only time we're going to hear her name.
[00:09:31] Speaker B: Really? Yeah.
[00:09:33] Speaker A: Who's name?
[00:09:33] Speaker B: Novi Navag. Oh, she did more with Prince? Yes, sir.
[00:09:38] Speaker A: I did not know this.
[00:09:39] Speaker B: Huh.
[00:09:40] Speaker C: Josel recently passed away.
[00:09:42] Speaker B: Oh.
[00:09:43] Speaker A: What the.
[00:09:44] Speaker B: Was she older?
Yeah.
[00:09:47] Speaker A: Did Prince take her with him when.
[00:09:50] Speaker B: Did she pass around the same time? An 18? Does it say from what?
That's sad.
[00:10:01] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:10:04] Speaker C: Unless, I mean, this wiki is worded pretty poorly.
[00:10:09] Speaker B: Hold on.
So there was also some covers done. Joe Roberts did it, which he didn't do too bad. And he did, like, I don't know, six or seven mixes of it.
Did you listen to him?
[00:10:28] Speaker A: You said, what about it wasn't too bad.
[00:10:31] Speaker B: Yeah. What are you saying about it?
Read me your notes, dude.
[00:10:37] Speaker A: Well, you didn't scream at me as much.
[00:10:39] Speaker B: No. So that was a well, and this is gonna be the thing. You didn't like the song to begin with.
[00:10:46] Speaker A: Are you reading my notes from.
[00:10:48] Speaker B: No. You told me you didn't like the song to begin with.
[00:10:51] Speaker A: Um, yeah, so, you know, the less screaming was cool.
[00:10:56] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:10:57] Speaker A: But as far as.
[00:10:58] Speaker B: I didn't like it.
[00:10:59] Speaker A: As far as the song. And just. I just don't like the song.
[00:11:09] Speaker B: Um.
Just, um.
[00:11:12] Speaker A: I don't know what I'm saying here in my notes, so I'll just leave it.
[00:11:17] Speaker B: What do you mean you don't know what you're saying? In your notes, you wrote something that you don't understand.
[00:11:21] Speaker A: Just read.
Just read. Ward. What? Done. Just.
[00:11:29] Speaker B: Just reword.
Reward.
[00:11:33] Speaker A: Just reworded.
[00:11:37] Speaker B: Let me see your notes. What am I looking at right there?
Looks like just road.
Just road. Words.
Done.
Real words. Just. Just read words.
R e a D. Just read words. Done.
So whatever. What does that mean? Just read words or just read words done.
[00:12:13] Speaker A: I don't know.
Maybe. I don't know.
[00:12:18] Speaker B: So you didn't like Joe Roberts, I'm guessing.
[00:12:21] Speaker A: I thought it was.
[00:12:22] Speaker B: If I had to choose, I would listen to him.
[00:12:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:12:27] Speaker B: So what about Gringo Floyd's version?
[00:12:32] Speaker A: No, not at all.
[00:12:33] Speaker B: And what about Silk?
[00:12:34] Speaker A: You know, that was an instrumental.
[00:12:36] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:12:36] Speaker A: Yeah. And then silk. No, I didn't listen to that.
[00:12:40] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:12:41] Speaker A: Didn't even know he did that. Honestly, I didn't see they.
[00:12:44] Speaker B: Not he.
[00:12:44] Speaker A: They. Whatever. You know what I'm saying, bro.
[00:12:47] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:12:48] Speaker C: She's done a lot.
[00:12:49] Speaker B: Really?
[00:12:50] Speaker A: Who? Silk?
They were all women.
[00:12:54] Speaker B: No, no. V nivog.
[00:12:57] Speaker C: She plays with the Doobie brothers, who's been with Frank Zappa, Michael Jackson.
[00:13:03] Speaker B: Michael Jackson. Really?
[00:13:04] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:13:06] Speaker B: Huh. I never heard of her.
[00:13:10] Speaker C: She's just kind of a touring gig viola player.
[00:13:15] Speaker B: Well, that is what she plays.
[00:13:16] Speaker C: But she does, like, everything that's orchestral.
[00:13:20] Speaker B: Oh, like strings and all that.
Hmm.
[00:13:26] Speaker C: She has her own band where she has a few albums, too.
[00:13:30] Speaker B: Huh.
[00:13:31] Speaker A: She's a great violin player, too.
[00:13:34] Speaker B: Was she?
[00:13:34] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:13:36] Speaker B: You don't even know her.
[00:13:38] Speaker C: She played with the freeway philharmonic, so.
[00:13:43] Speaker B: She'S, she's done quite a bit.
[00:13:45] Speaker A: She's been everywhere.
[00:13:46] Speaker C: Yeah, but I can't confirm if she's passed away or not because the wiki is bad.
[00:13:53] Speaker B: Really?
Yeah.
Huh.
[00:13:58] Speaker C: Well, she's, I mean, she's aged, you know, she's, she's an older gal.
[00:14:01] Speaker B: Well, she'd have to be. Cause I mean, prince would have been in his sixties now if he was.
[00:14:05] Speaker A: Still alive and she was all in the Doobie brothers.
[00:14:08] Speaker B: Yeah, that's way so, huh. Well, way cool. See, you learned something. We are in an educational podcast.
You learned that Prince surrounded himself with good musicians that you probably never heard of, right?
[00:14:26] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:27] Speaker B: So, yeah, there is a lot, huh.
[00:14:29] Speaker C: But you've heard their music.
[00:14:31] Speaker B: You've heard their music. So you've heard these people numerous times and didn't even realize it. So thank you, Novi.

[00:16:35] Speaker A: I said I'm tired now.
[00:16:36] Speaker B: Didn't really grab a whole lot of variety when you prepare for the tv. No, not really.
[00:16:41] Speaker A: So I was over. I was done.
[00:16:43] Speaker B: You was done? You didn't even listen to twinkle, twinkle.
[00:16:44] Speaker A: I did, but no, I'm just.
[00:16:46] Speaker B: Oh, boy, here we go again.
Doritos, dinamita sticks, tangy, fiery lime. And these are media on the.
[00:16:57] Speaker C: Yeah, that's higher up the gauge than the previous ones.
[00:17:00] Speaker B: Oh, boy.
[00:17:07] Speaker A: Huh?
Yeah. It was like a little piece of hair floating.
[00:17:11] Speaker B: There's all the music enhancers. What?
Oh, these look hot.
[00:17:17] Speaker A: Like sexy hot or just like, hot?
[00:17:19] Speaker B: Like you're gonna be in the bathroom after this, dude.
[00:17:22] Speaker A: Oh, lord.
Are these hard, like, funky? No, these are more like the.
Take a few more of those, cuz I like the lime and the base.
[00:17:41] Speaker B: You're gonna get a lot of lime right off the bat.
[00:17:43] Speaker A: Okay. Okay.
Whoa.
[00:17:48] Speaker B: Right?
[00:17:48] Speaker A: Whoa.
Is that a good one?
[00:17:51] Speaker C: Like a bit of lime?
[00:17:53] Speaker B: It's. It's lime.
[00:17:57] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:17:58] Speaker C: But it's like the rind.
[00:18:00] Speaker A: Oh, my.
[00:18:01] Speaker B: Yeah, it is lime.
[00:18:02] Speaker A: Whoo.
[00:18:04] Speaker B: Lime with kick. I don't. What is it supposed to be? Lime and what?
[00:18:07] Speaker C: Tangy, fiery lime. That's it.
[00:18:09] Speaker B: Just lime?
[00:18:09] Speaker C: Lime and hot.
[00:18:11] Speaker A: It's got it.
[00:18:12] Speaker B: And that's what it is. It is lime and hot. Yeah.
[00:18:15] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:18:18] Speaker B: Wow.
Yeah.
[00:18:21] Speaker A: I am a fan.
[00:18:24] Speaker B: Really?
[00:18:24] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:18:26] Speaker B: Oh, you're gonna be taking them home with you then?
[00:18:28] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:18:32] Speaker B: Oh, man, these are good.
[00:18:35] Speaker A: I don't want y'all talking about.
[00:18:41] Speaker B: Go out and eat some more stuff. Wow.
So you didn't like the twinkle, twinkle little rock star?
[00:18:47] Speaker A: No, I was done after that. I didn't want to. It was horrible. Just don't. Can't do it.
[00:18:52] Speaker C: Oh, I'll just stick with my smoky chili queso.
[00:18:57] Speaker B: That's the same kind of. It's hot, too.
Wow.
Timmy, tea's out. A drink. It looks like.
[00:19:08] Speaker A: Oreo in this done mix.
[00:19:11] Speaker B: All right, so I like the song. Took a little bit to grow on me, but I like the song.
Most of the versions I thought were.
[00:19:20] Speaker A: All right, my chair is defective. What is going on?
[00:19:25] Speaker B: I'm not sure it's a chair.
[00:19:29] Speaker A: Way to, like, tighten that up.
[00:19:30] Speaker B: Or probably.
[00:19:31] Speaker C: No, that chair is pretty jacked.
[00:19:33] Speaker A: Is it okay? Because we say it's moving on me. Okay.
That was part of the show, bro.
[00:19:41] Speaker C: But yes. Pretty, pretty whack.
[00:19:44] Speaker B: Pretty whackadoodle got a little kick, doesn't it?
[00:19:48] Speaker A: It's getting me.
[00:19:49] Speaker B: Getting in the back of the throat.
[00:19:51] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah.
[00:19:52] Speaker C: Coffee and this, like, frito hot spice. Whatever they put on there never mixes.
[00:19:59] Speaker B: I think he found that out very much so.
[00:20:03] Speaker C: It really brings out the bitter and everything you're eating.
[00:20:06] Speaker B: Wow. All right, so, yeah, anyway, back to prince and adore.
[00:20:16] Speaker A: You know, this song was played live many, many different years.
[00:20:26] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:20:26] Speaker A: All the way up from. From 87 all the way to 2016.
[00:20:30] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, it was a good song. I mean, he. No, no, no.
[00:20:34] Speaker A: It's not a good. What is he talking about?
You.
[00:20:38] Speaker B: He liked it. He played it live a lot, so he thought it was a good song.
Should have an eat your hotline.
[00:20:50] Speaker A: Mm hmm. Mm hmm.
[00:20:52] Speaker B: That's all we got for this one anyway, right?
[00:20:54] Speaker A: Hey, I got them one, man.
