Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: It is now disclaimer time.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: We are here to share Prince's works with the utmost authenticity, clarity, and precision. This means there may be situations where the material being discussed may be sensitive or offensive to some. However, we have chosen to discuss his work as it was initially produced. We will not alter any of his original work to suit anyone's comfort, including in our own. This podcast is to celebrate Prince and his works.
[00:00:29] Speaker C: Thank you for your support and understanding. Now, on to the show.
[00:00:35] Speaker D: Hello. Welcome to Alphabet Suite podcast for the Prince songbook. There are hundreds of songs to choose from. You have chosen calling.
[00:00:47] Speaker E: Welcome, one and all to another exciting and glorious episode of the Alphabet Suite podcast.
The podcast for all your favorite prince talk, where we discuss everything Prince related from a to z.
I am your host, Pat.
What? You said you're going action packed. I'm trying to be.
You know, maybe one day they play us in the schools where we educate them on print. Oh, you never know. Hey, experts in music theory there, see?
[00:01:31] Speaker A: Hopefully not the butt licking episode.
[00:01:34] Speaker E: That one might be edited.
[00:01:37] Speaker A: I am your co host, Timothy.
[00:01:40] Speaker B: And I'm producer Aaron.
[00:01:41] Speaker A: Rock on.
[00:01:43] Speaker E: All right, so today, what we got today? What do we got today?
[00:01:46] Speaker A: I'm so excited. What do we got? What do we got?
[00:01:49] Speaker E: What do we got? We have just for you if you act now.
An act of moron.
All right, so act of God is on 2010, which at first, I did not like that album. I know it took me a bit to get into that one.
[00:02:16] Speaker A: Really?
[00:02:17] Speaker E: Yeah, but I like it now. It's not one of my favorites. It's definitely one of the lesser albums, but I do like it. And act of God is from that one.
I got gas coming up from that funky stuff. Yeah, I got it.
[00:02:37] Speaker A: Hold on.
[00:02:40] Speaker C: When did this come out?
[00:02:42] Speaker E: I'll give you one guess.
[00:02:45] Speaker C: Might it be 1910?
[00:02:49] Speaker E: It was 1910.
[00:02:51] Speaker A: I don't like that year.
[00:02:52] Speaker E: You don't like that year? No, it came out 2010. And if I remember right, this album was released. Let me check something here. I think if I remember, this album was released as like an add in to, like, a magazine or newspaper or something.
Is there b. What's going on?
[00:03:24] Speaker A: Some little thing flying here.
It's flying all over.
[00:03:31] Speaker E: Anyway, did you do your musical answers?
[00:03:35] Speaker A: Yeah, just about two minutes ago.
[00:03:40] Speaker E: So, yeah, I believe if I remember, I want to say that 2010 was released as follows. Part of.
[00:03:48] Speaker A: And look at there.
The group Europe did its music, too.
Did you read that?
[00:03:55] Speaker E: What?
[00:03:55] Speaker A: The group Europe did his music.
[00:03:58] Speaker E: Europe did not do the music.
[00:04:01] Speaker A: Making a rumor.
What are you looking?
[00:04:05] Speaker E: I'm looking because I thought.
Yeah, it came with the german version of Rolling Stone.
[00:04:18] Speaker A: What?
[00:04:19] Speaker E: It was released with the Rolling Stone magazine?
[00:04:22] Speaker A: That's right.
[00:04:24] Speaker E: I think it got released later, but. Yeah, it was initially released with Rolling Stone magazine, the 2010 album.
[00:04:34] Speaker A: Not to change a subject, but I'm going to real quick. I was at Walgreens yesterday and they had. I think it's People magazine.
[00:04:44] Speaker E: That is a. Yeah, yeah.
[00:04:47] Speaker A: Prince was on the COVID Really? Yeah.
[00:04:49] Speaker E: For what?
[00:04:50] Speaker A: I don't know. I didn't get to read. It was too far back and I was trying to hurry up and get the hell out, but I'd seen them.
Yeah, that's interesting. I might have to go back and look.
[00:05:03] Speaker E: Yeah, they'd be curious to know what they would be talking about.
[00:05:07] Speaker A: Right.
[00:05:08] Speaker E: Anyway, because nothing big has really happened with them lately.
[00:05:11] Speaker A: Right.
[00:05:11] Speaker E: I mean, the last thing that happened was the Diamonds and Pearls box set release, and that was last year.
However, I know they were talking about doing a big 40th anniversary release for Purple Rain again.
[00:05:31] Speaker A: Right.
[00:05:32] Speaker E: I don't know if that's actually going to happen or not, but put your mic by your mouth.
[00:05:38] Speaker A: Do you hear me talking?
[00:05:41] Speaker E: Not when you're back there, no.
[00:05:44] Speaker A: I was sitting there.
People can see me, bro.
[00:05:48] Speaker E: See, this is really.
Are we going back to the porn stuff again?
Oh, dude.
[00:06:05] Speaker A: Thinking back for my woman days. Is that what it is? Yeah.
[00:06:09] Speaker E: But yeah, they are. Supposedly there's going to be something big coming this year for the 40th anniversary of Purple rain.
[00:06:19] Speaker A: Why are we talking about that? Where it's supposed to be?
[00:06:21] Speaker E: I don't know. You said he was on a magazine.
Why are you, like, getting all.
[00:06:29] Speaker A: Because I was going to get into that and I was going to ask, what do you think is going to be different than what they.
Is there going to be more added stuff? I don't know. So that's why I edit, because we're red. We're good.
[00:06:45] Speaker E: Okay, that's it. Red light. Green light.
Are you okay?
Boy, that stuff has messed you up, hasn't it?
We probably should save that for the last time. Yeah.
But anyway, back to act of God.
[00:07:04] Speaker A: Thank you.
[00:07:06] Speaker E: I liked it.
[00:07:08] Speaker A: Did you really?
[00:07:08] Speaker E: I did. Not at first.
[00:07:09] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, that's right. Didn't we do this already?
[00:07:12] Speaker E: Well, no, I was talking about the whole album.
[00:07:13] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:07:14] Speaker E: But now I'm just talking about the song act of God.
There was one song off of 2010 that I liked right away, and that was compassion. That's the only one that I heard that. And I'm like, oh, I like that song.
[00:07:26] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:07:26] Speaker E: That is a song that I have and would play, pick and say, oh, I want to hear some prince.
[00:07:33] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:07:35] Speaker E: The rest of it, I'm getting more and more accustomed to it and getting into it.
But I like this one.
I think there's a few albums in there, like 2010 and Planet Earth, where his music really kind of became more.
Became more intentional. Where he was trying to make statements.
[00:08:21] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:08:23] Speaker E: It wasn't just whimsical music, just.
He was making a statement.
[00:08:35] Speaker A: Like the fun was out.
[00:08:39] Speaker E: The what?
[00:08:40] Speaker A: When you have fun, when you're enjoying things, then your music comes out. When you're trying to make a statement, there's a reason you're making a statement. So the fun is kind of gone.
[00:08:51] Speaker E: You're right, because how smart. Well, no, I mean, when you stop and think about it. Yeah. As he got older, everything he did, he wanted to make a statement about.
So he wrote his music with more intentions than previously.
I think maybe earlier.
The fun was there, and so you got music that was just whimsical and fun to listen to.
But, yeah, later on, he really was always trying to make statements with his music. And for me, I think music can suffer when you go into it. If you don't let the creative juices just flow. If you go into it intentionally trying to do something, I think your art can suffer. And that doesn't have to be just music. I mean, people who make movies or write books or whatever their art is, if you're intentionally trying to just force something to happen.
And this song, act of God, was.
It was an intentional song. I mean, if you listen to the lyrics to it.
He was trying to make a point with this.
And there are no covers. Surprise, surprise. No sampling. I don't think anyone really, and it could be because of the way he released them. But when you look at 2010 and Planet Earth and that, they're not big albums for him at all. Right, when you include your album, the only way to get it is to buy a german copy of a Rolling Stone magazine.
[00:10:51] Speaker A: I thought that was a cool idea, though.
[00:10:54] Speaker E: So it's cool for me if you're going to release it later. But when you say the only way to get it is to do that, do you know how hard it was for me to get a copy of that?
I had to find someone selling it on eBay. And of course, you take a $5 magazine now and I'm paying $30 so I can get a copy of the CD.
[00:11:19] Speaker A: I don't know. I still think that's cool. It's rare. Yeah, well, I don't know. Yeah, I don't know.
[00:11:28] Speaker E: Anywho, so what are you trying to say? You don't know?
[00:11:31] Speaker A: Yeah, something like that.
[00:11:35] Speaker E: So what did you think of the song?
[00:11:37] Speaker A: I love the meaning. And the song was really good. I liked it. That's all.
[00:11:43] Speaker E: I feel like I'm talking to Forrest Gump. That's all I got to say about that.
[00:11:48] Speaker A: Well, I ain't got much more to say.
[00:11:50] Speaker E: I got a pee.
[00:11:53] Speaker A: I actually do.
[00:11:55] Speaker E: Are you like trying to rush us out of here? Too bad, because I got a cheesy.
[00:11:59] Speaker C: Segue to our sponsored segment.

It starts Gastos.
[00:12:28] Speaker A: For some reason I wanted to say Costco.
[00:12:32] Speaker E: Costco is definitely not our partner.

[00:14:02] Speaker E: You don't want to miss this partner coming right for us.
[00:14:10] Speaker A: Today.
[00:14:12] Speaker E: Another limited time flavor. So hopefully, I like to say hopefully they're good. But like you've said, if they're good then you can't get them again.
And they were only in the store one time.
I almost bought two bags of these just because I looked at them like those could possibly be really good.
[00:14:35] Speaker A: Stop buying just one bag of things. Just start buying the two regardless because.
[00:14:40] Speaker E: They only had, like, two bags left. And should I take the last two? But I didn't. I left it for some other lay's. Cheesy garlic bread flavored potato chips.
So I was like that.
[00:14:55] Speaker A: Interesting.
[00:14:56] Speaker E: That has Promise.
Who doesn't like cheesy garlic bread?
People would say they act.
That would be correct.
You don't even look like you want to try these.
[00:15:19] Speaker A: I just don't see how they're going to have that taste that they're discussing on the bag.
[00:15:26] Speaker E: Cheese and garlic.
They do.
[00:15:31] Speaker A: Really, though?
[00:15:32] Speaker E: They do.
[00:15:32] Speaker A: Sure. Smells like.
[00:15:33] Speaker E: Yeah, I could smell it.
It tastes like cheesy garlic breaded.
[00:15:49] Speaker A: Like nothing.
[00:15:50] Speaker D: It.
[00:15:53] Speaker A: There we go.
[00:15:54] Speaker E: Did you get it?
[00:15:55] Speaker A: Yeah, that first one I took. There's no taste.
[00:15:57] Speaker E: Pretty bland.
All kinds of cheese.
They put yeast on it to make it taste like bread, but they didn't.
[00:16:10] Speaker A: It's not bad. No. Finally had some kind of magic going.
[00:16:13] Speaker E: On to make it taste like bread.
[00:16:15] Speaker A: It does.
[00:16:17] Speaker E: That's just. It tastes like. It's not like you're just tasting cheesy garlic. You're tasting cheesy garlic bread in a chip.
[00:16:25] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:16:29] Speaker E: I should have bought the second bag.
I actually had it in the cart and I put it back.
[00:16:38] Speaker A: What was wrong with you, man?
[00:16:40] Speaker E: I like those.
Getting a head nod from producer Aaron.
Digging them.
Yeah, I should have bought the second bag.
We got, like, five different cheeses on there.
Oh, no, it tastes good.
[00:17:03] Speaker A: It.
[00:17:04] Speaker E: Well.
[00:17:07] Speaker A: I like that.
[00:17:08] Speaker E: You like that?
[00:17:09] Speaker A: Yeah. Daddy, like, isn't this the first. Daddy, like, isn't this the first thing of snack time that I like today? I don't know.
[00:17:16] Speaker E: Could be.
[00:17:19] Speaker A: Yeah, those are, huh.
[00:17:22] Speaker E: All right, so lay's cheesy garlic bread, potato chips.
[00:17:27] Speaker A: That actually tastes like cheesy garlic.
[00:17:30] Speaker E: Not just cheesy garlic. You get the bread flavor.
[00:17:33] Speaker A: You do.
[00:17:34] Speaker E: And that's the thing.
[00:17:37] Speaker A: Only from lay's.
[00:17:39] Speaker E: Well, they're probably only gone now. Well, yeah, I bought those a couple.
[00:17:43] Speaker A: Of weeks ago, but you could probably get them if you're in New York or Chicago or get them on eBay.
[00:17:48] Speaker E: For $75 a bag.
[00:17:50] Speaker A: Yeah, you can do that.
[00:17:52] Speaker E: That's just stupid. That drives me nuts, people to do that, go around buying up all the limited stuff and then try to sell.
[00:17:58] Speaker A: It later like they did with the toilet paper and the hand sanitizer.
It's terrible.
[00:18:06] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:18:06] Speaker A: People should be shot.
[00:18:08] Speaker E: Greed. It's just greed. People are greedy.
[00:18:11] Speaker A: Nonsense.
Maybe I shouldn't have said that.
Bleak that out.
[00:18:17] Speaker E: Just remember, kids.
[00:18:20] Speaker A: Hey, did you. You read or heard about Kansas City?
[00:18:26] Speaker E: Yeah, I did.
[00:18:28] Speaker A: Terrible, man.
[00:18:30] Speaker E: Again, stupid.
This is the world we have come to live in.
[00:18:35] Speaker A: And you can't tell me that was just. Oh, hey, I don't like that gun. Shoot him. He came with a big ass gun, bro. He knew what he was going to do.
[00:18:45] Speaker E: Yeah, they always do the fudge.
[00:18:48] Speaker C: Let's not get into that on this show.
[00:18:50] Speaker A: Yeah, I'm sorry. I mean, I'm not really saying nothing.
That's just terrible. People are terrible. They can be terrible. And they're not bad people. They just make terrible choices. Why?
Just like with music who think they can sing well. Yeah. What is you doing, bro?
[00:19:08] Speaker E: Put the mic down.
[00:19:09] Speaker A: Step away from the microphone and kick that mic somewhere. Anyway, that was terrible. In Kansas.
[00:19:16] Speaker E: Yeah, it's horrible.
[00:19:17] Speaker A: I feel bad for them.
[00:19:21] Speaker E: Anyway, back to act of God.
Good stuff.
[00:19:30] Speaker A: I liked it.
[00:19:31] Speaker E: Good stuff.
[00:19:31] Speaker A: No.
[00:19:32] Speaker E: No samples, no covers.
[00:19:35] Speaker A: Who was that?
[00:19:36] Speaker E: Who is what?
[00:19:38] Speaker A: Alicia.
Go back up. Alicia.
She's from other things.
[00:19:45] Speaker E: Alicia D's?
[00:19:46] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:19:52] Speaker E: Buddy.
[00:19:54] Speaker A: Dude, are you drunk?
No.
Hey, pronounce that.
What is the one up above? Elisa.
[00:20:05] Speaker E: Liv Warfield.
[00:20:07] Speaker A: Is that the one without the hair? Yes. Okay. She's got hair now, does she? Yeah. And she's got another album coming out.
[00:20:13] Speaker E: She's got a lot. Yeah, she does a lot of music.
She's pretty good.
[00:20:17] Speaker A: I was pretty stoked about that.
[00:20:18] Speaker E: Yeah, we're going to be talking about stuff like that.
[00:20:22] Speaker A: We better hurry our booties.
[00:20:24] Speaker E: Yeah, we're going to be talking about stuff like that on Patreon, where we talk about the artists themselves.
[00:20:31] Speaker A: Okay, when are we going to do that?
[00:20:33] Speaker E: We're going to start doing that here real soon.
[00:20:35] Speaker A: Okay. Something to look forward to.
[00:20:37] Speaker E: Something to look forward to. For anyone who wants to subscribe to our Patreon account at Sweet podcast. I did that. Like producer Aaron.

[00:20:47] Speaker A: You're getting.
[00:20:49] Speaker E: Thank you.
[00:20:50] Speaker A: Yeah. Getting better.
[00:20:51] Speaker E: Yeah. So I think that's all we got for act of God and some amazing cheesy garlic bread potato chips.
