Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: It is now disclaimer time.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: We are here to share Prince's works with the utmost authenticity, clarity, and precision. This means there may be situations where the material being discussed may be sensitive or offensive to some. However, we have chosen to discuss his work as it was initially produced. We will not alter any of his original work to suit anyone's comfort, including our own. This podcast is to celebrate Prince and his works.
[00:00:29] Speaker C: Thank you for your support and understanding. Now onto the show.
[00:00:35] Speaker A: Hello. Welcome to Alphabet podcast for the Prince songbook. There are hundreds of songs to choose from. You have chosen.
What was that?
[00:00:50] Speaker B: That's pretty cool. Hello and welcome.
You gonna.
[00:00:57] Speaker A: Oh, am I doing that?
[00:00:58] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:00] Speaker A: Can we get that one more time?
[00:01:01] Speaker B: That was cool. That was cool.
There it is.
[00:01:07] Speaker A: All right.
[00:01:07] Speaker B: Ask and you shall receive.
[00:01:09] Speaker A: Well, welcome back to another great episode, another podcast of the Alphabet suites. I am your host, Timothy.
[00:01:20] Speaker B: And I am Pat in.
[00:01:24] Speaker C: I'm producer Aaron, providing the sparkles rocket.
[00:01:28] Speaker B: Can we get it one more time?
Excellent. Puts me in the mood, you know, right now, I just want a podcast.
So what are we talking about today?
[00:01:41] Speaker A: Today, we're. No, that ain't it. I'm off of the.
[00:01:45] Speaker B: You're off. Off of your meds or what?
[00:01:48] Speaker A: We are talking about a woman's gotta have it.
[00:01:52] Speaker B: And what is it that a woman's gotta have?
Money.
[00:01:56] Speaker A: Control.
[00:01:57] Speaker B: Control, money. Hopefully, no women are watching this podcast, so.
[00:02:04] Speaker A: Naughty, naughty.
[00:02:07] Speaker B: So this is actually kind of a weird I thing to be talking about, because it's really got nothing to do with Prince, other than the fact that he did a cover of it with Nona gay.
He didn't write it. He didn't do. I mean, it's a remake from Bobby Womack.
And from 1972, keep in mind, this is from 1972 that he did, but he had Nona gay redo it on top of that.
They're not even sure, from what I can tell, if Prince even played instruments on it.
So other than it being on the 1800 new funk sample cd that was out there, I'm not sure how much this really has to do with Prince or how much, I should say, how much prince had to do with this song.
[00:03:18] Speaker A: That's interesting. It's kind of weird, but it was on the.
[00:03:23] Speaker B: Is on the 1800 new funk, because remember, they did that 1800 new funk back in the nineties, and that's where he took songs that had, like, a madhouse song, and it had a maite song, and it had. It was supposed to be a sample of what was coming from Paisley park. The MPG.
[00:03:42] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:03:43] Speaker B: And he was working with Nona gay at the time.
And this was supposed to be, like, part of what he was doing with her. But it. Again, it.
He didn't really write it. He didn't really remix it. If you look at who was on it, had, you know, the NPG played instruments, but there's. They have what's called unidentified musicians who they think was probably prince playing whatever was not specifically called out.
But, yeah, it's. It's kind of a strange little thing.
You know what I mean?
[00:04:25] Speaker A: I can't find that.
[00:04:27] Speaker B: Can't find what this woman's gotta have.
[00:04:30] Speaker A: I was trying to look at what you were looking at, but I don't see it. So it's not.
[00:04:37] Speaker B: Yeah, it is. You gotta.
[00:04:38] Speaker A: No, I'm saying it's not on the main page thing.
[00:04:42] Speaker B: No, you gotta go. But you should have a printout of it.
[00:04:46] Speaker A: Do I? I do, but I don't want to grab that now. Anyway, let's go.
[00:04:52] Speaker B: Do you need me to come over there and show you where it's at?
[00:04:54] Speaker A: No, I think I found it. Yep, there it is. Look at there. See how smart I got this?
[00:04:58] Speaker B: Well, but it's just kind of a weird thing, you know, it's.
Yeah, I'm not really sure it's a good song.
[00:05:08] Speaker A: Who's Ricky Peterson?
[00:05:10] Speaker B: He's Paul Peterson's brother.
[00:05:13] Speaker A: That's right.
[00:05:13] Speaker B: Yeah. Same point.
[00:05:14] Speaker A: I think we've had this conversation before.
[00:05:18] Speaker B: As far as who Ricky Peterson is.
[00:05:20] Speaker A: Yes. Because I'm kind of remembering that now.
So it's also on Nona gay CD or what?
[00:05:27] Speaker B: No, and that's the other thing, is it never made it to Nona's cd. What? It never did anything other than this on the 1800 new funk.
[00:05:36] Speaker A: Oh, I just found something I never knew. And maybe they didn't know neither. Or maybe I'm just an idiot and everybody knows except for me.
[00:05:45] Speaker B: Well, you know now. So what is it that you know that you didn't know 30 seconds ago?
[00:05:50] Speaker A: No. Neg is Marvin Gaye's daughter. Daughter? I didn't know that.
[00:05:53] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:54] Speaker A: Wow.
[00:05:55] Speaker B: Yeah. And she's a pretty lady, too. Nona gay.
Very beautiful woman.
So.
[00:06:05] Speaker A: Yeah, that's puzzling. I didn't know that.
[00:06:06] Speaker B: Yeah. So this was done in 90.
They think it was recorded in 93.
[00:06:14] Speaker A: No.
[00:06:15] Speaker B: And released in 94 with the 1800 new funk.
[00:06:18] Speaker A: Actually, from what I've heard, it was.
[00:06:23] Speaker B: You heard it through the grapevine.
[00:06:24] Speaker A: Yeah, I heard it. That's pretty good.
That's funny. Marvin Gaye.
[00:06:32] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, exactly.
[00:06:33] Speaker A: That's hilarious.
[00:06:34] Speaker B: So you heard it through the grave. Who, Marvin Gaye? No, his dad killed him.
[00:06:40] Speaker A: What the heck?
[00:06:41] Speaker B: Murdered him. Yeah. Shot him.
[00:06:43] Speaker A: Shame on him.
[00:06:45] Speaker B: Yeah. That was an ugly thing.
[00:06:46] Speaker A: Mm. Okay, so what was that thing?
Oh, yeah, I heard that it was actually done in 1984 by the Beastie boys, and. But little is known about that one either.
[00:07:02] Speaker B: Yeah. Are you trying to be funny, or.
[00:07:05] Speaker A: There's a rumor.
[00:07:05] Speaker B: There's a rumor. I'll just spread it.
[00:07:07] Speaker A: Spread it.
[00:07:07] Speaker B: Are you gonna spread the rumor? Spread it. Spread the rumor that a woman's gotta have. It was done by the Beastie boys.
[00:07:12] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:07:14] Speaker B: Okay, so speaking of the Beastie boys.
[00:07:17] Speaker A: I like the Beastie boys.
[00:07:18] Speaker B: I love the Beastie boys. Producer Aaron played something for me the other day.
I can't remember who it is, but I'm sure he'll jump in and tell me.
It's.
I'm waiting. He's not jumping in.
[00:07:33] Speaker A: Why is the door shut? I can't see you.
[00:07:34] Speaker B: You can't see him?
[00:07:35] Speaker C: Oh, I'm waiting for you to finish.
[00:07:37] Speaker B: Oh, there. It's. I think it's a. It's not a group. I think it's just two guys. They go by the name, I think, but they're newer. I don't know how new, because he just played it for me. I haven't had a chance to research. They do, like, an excellent job of making music that sounds just like the Beastie boys.
[00:07:59] Speaker A: Really?
[00:08:00] Speaker B: I mean, vocally, they don't. Their voices don't sound like the Beastie boys.
[00:08:04] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:08:05] Speaker B: Yeah, but the flow, the way they rap, their cadence, the music, everything else they do. If you were to hear this, the music, and then put a beastie boy's voice. It's the beastie boysenhe, like early Beastie boys. It was really cool.
[00:08:22] Speaker C: It's Joey Valens and Bray.
[00:08:24] Speaker B: And who? Bray? Bray? Yeah, Joey Valens and Bray. So anyone out there who is like us and loves the Beastie boys, too, check out Joey Valance and Bray, because it is really, really cool.
So I don't know how much they have out. I don't know when it came out. But, yeah, check it anyway. I digress.
You said beastie boys, and they got two albums. Oh, did you look them up already?
[00:08:57] Speaker A: Ep.
[00:09:01] Speaker B: Well, if you like the Beastie Boys, their style of music, they are pretty newer.
[00:09:05] Speaker A: Well, they're, when you say pretty newer, 2023 and 2024.
[00:09:10] Speaker B: Yeah, that's really nice. Their albums, and that's really new.
[00:09:13] Speaker A: They got the ep from 2020.
[00:09:14] Speaker B: Look, you're, like, doing stuff now. Cause you got your computer. So you feel like producer Aaron out there?
[00:09:23] Speaker A: All right, so, yeah, back to a woman's gotta have it. Excuse me. Sorry about that.
[00:09:28] Speaker B: So I don't really know what a woman's gonna have, but whatever it is, if Nona's asking for it, I'll give it to her.
[00:09:34] Speaker C: Hey, so does that have any reference to a Bobby womack song?
[00:09:41] Speaker B: It is. It's the COVID to Bobby Womack song.
[00:09:43] Speaker C: It's a cover.
[00:09:44] Speaker B: Yeah. It is a cover to Bobby Womack from 1972.
[00:09:49] Speaker C: I must have missed that.
[00:09:50] Speaker B: Yeah, but the thing is, like I said, it is a cover, but printed, really nothing to do with it. But since, you know, it kind of came out on his label and he put. I mean, we're talking about it. That's. That's how complete we're trying to be here.
So, I mean, I'm sure there's plenty of covers of it where I didn't run out and listen to them all, because it's not a print song.
I did. We'll try to post the original from Bobby Womack.
[00:10:19] Speaker A: Did you say whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop.
[00:10:24] Speaker B: So.
But we will post. Try to post the original one so you can see what the original sounds like as opposed to Nona's version.
But, yeah, I like the song.
[00:10:36] Speaker C: That one's 100% already uploaded.
[00:10:40] Speaker B: Which one?
[00:10:42] Speaker C: The original.
[00:10:44] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, I'm sure. But what I'm saying is, if it'll let us do it, we'll put it with our sister station. Our sister station? Like we're on the radio or something. People don't even know what radio is anymore. Our sister podcast, the Alphabet suite playlist.
[00:11:00] Speaker C: It's not even a podcast.
[00:11:03] Speaker B: You're right. So, look, it's been so long since we've sat down here. It's. It's not a podcast. It's just a.
[00:11:12] Speaker C: It's a YouTube channel.
[00:11:13] Speaker B: That's what I was. That's what I was trying to say.
It's YouTube channel.
[00:11:21] Speaker A: I think I miss really, a lot there.
[00:11:24] Speaker B: Are you sleeping?
[00:11:25] Speaker A: Maybe.
[00:11:26] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:26] Speaker A: Yeah. It's this Oreo iced coffee. It's really good.
[00:11:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:31] Speaker A: Cause, you know, I can't get the creamer anymore. Cause they suck. They took it from us.
[00:11:36] Speaker B: I could care less. I hate coffee.
[00:11:38] Speaker A: Little beep, beep, beep, beep. You're lucky. I was gonna bring that for snack time as well.
[00:11:43] Speaker B: No, don't bring that. Yeah, I mean, I would try it, but. No, that's all right.
[00:11:47] Speaker A: Dude, it tastes like Oreo cookie. Just.
[00:11:49] Speaker B: Well, then I'll eat an Oreo cookie.
[00:11:51] Speaker A: Then.
[00:11:51] Speaker B: But speaking of snack time.
[00:11:55] Speaker A: I'm not done, you know?
[00:11:56] Speaker B: You got more to say?
[00:11:57] Speaker A: I do. I haven't said anything on my notes, bro.
[00:11:59] Speaker B: Well, speak.
Preach on, brother Beavis.
[00:12:03] Speaker A: So, man. Oh, no. Something.
So in this song, a woman's gotta have it. I love her voice.
I just. I love Nona gay.
Um, the song's really good.
I think the. The music, it flows good with her. The way she sings.
[00:12:31] Speaker B: Yeah, her sings.
[00:12:32] Speaker A: Her sings.
[00:12:33] Speaker B: Her sings.
[00:12:36] Speaker A: I will let you know, though. I didn't go and look, listen to the Bobby womack.
[00:12:42] Speaker B: No version.
[00:12:43] Speaker A: No, because Nona's version is all I needed.
It was good. I loved it. Yeah, it was good.
[00:12:52] Speaker B: Yeah, I enjoyed it. But I like her voice.
[00:12:55] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, she's pretty.
[00:12:58] Speaker B: She's a very beautiful woman.
[00:13:00] Speaker A: She's not, you know, butt licking worthy, but. No, not to bring that back up.
[00:13:04] Speaker B: But we were gonna bring that right back.
[00:13:06] Speaker A: Yeah, she's like, you know, right below it.
[00:13:08] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, she's a beautiful woman. So.
[00:13:11] Speaker C: Not to say the thing, but says the thing anyways. So maybe we should say the thing of who's. Who's. Who's doing snack time.
Who, uh, who. Who do we partner with for snack time?
[00:13:25] Speaker B: Who do we partner with for snack time?
[00:13:29] Speaker A: Costos.
[00:13:30] Speaker B: There you go.
[00:13:31] Speaker A: Castos. Costos.

[00:15:30] Speaker B: But, yeah, so. I hear the bags of rumbling. Let's see what comes flying in at us.
What do we got? Yeah.
Oh, we have doritos, dinamita sticks, smoky chili queso.
I don't know. You'd say chili and that kind of.
[00:16:04] Speaker A: Oh, horrible, right?
[00:16:07] Speaker B: That smells horrible, dude.
I'm gonna grab a couple just so I can make sure I get.
[00:16:14] Speaker A: There's our mascot. He's in there.
[00:16:18] Speaker B: We got morph in here.
[00:16:21] Speaker C: Shiitakes.
[00:16:23] Speaker B: Shiitake.
You want to try it first? Morph. Take a lick. Do it, Marv.
[00:16:30] Speaker C: Come on.
[00:16:36] Speaker B: I like those fries.
Got a little tang to it. Look at Tang. Whoa.
Little heat on the back end.
[00:16:57] Speaker A: No, I don't like these.
[00:17:01] Speaker B: I'm not sure what I think of. I mean.
[00:17:05] Speaker C: I guess I'm thinking.
[00:17:07] Speaker B: I guess producer Aaron likes them.
[00:17:09] Speaker C: No, they're okay.
[00:17:17] Speaker B: Got a little heat to them. A little bit on the back end. You get that little kick on the heat level.
Says it's. Says it's a medium.
You gotta remember I got. I got a white boy wussy mouth.
[00:17:36] Speaker A: They're not horrible.
[00:17:38] Speaker B: No, they're not horrible. I think I could eat them if they didn't have so much kick to it.
As producer Aaron throws a handful in his mouth.
Lean it up against Timmy T's computer. There you go.
[00:17:56] Speaker A: Could they see him?
[00:17:57] Speaker B: I hope not. No? Nothing?
[00:18:00] Speaker C: I'm blurring me out.
[00:18:01] Speaker A: There you go.
[00:18:03] Speaker B: You gotta pay to see this.
Yeah, you could go to our patreon.
We have a Patreon account if you wanna see extra stuff, so.
[00:18:17] Speaker C: Okay. I'm back.
[00:18:18] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:18:18] Speaker C: Thanks, Castos.
[00:18:20] Speaker B: Thanks, Castos. And I was trying to tell them, where's our Patreon? What's our Patreon?
[00:18:25] Speaker C: Patreon.com. the alphabetsuitepodcast.
[00:18:28] Speaker B: Yeah. That's got some cool stuff.
[00:18:30] Speaker C: I don't think it has the thing to self.
[00:18:33] Speaker B: Okay.
So if you want to see some cool things, we got some more stuff coming on there too.
More unboxings and cool stuff. More behind the scenes. Timmy T. Does not look like a happy camper.
[00:18:46] Speaker A: That was.
[00:18:48] Speaker C: You get a behind the scenes compilation and a snack time compilation at the end of every season.
[00:18:56] Speaker B: Well, that's not all you get.
[00:18:59] Speaker C: Well, no, no, I'm just saying, like. Yeah, you said behind the scenes. I'm like, there's a compilation.
[00:19:04] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:19:05] Speaker C: For every season.
[00:19:06] Speaker B: Yeah. And the snack time compilation.
[00:19:09] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:19:11] Speaker A: Yeah, I got a little in my mouth.
[00:19:12] Speaker B: Yeah. Still burning.
[00:19:13] Speaker C: A little warm.
[00:19:15] Speaker B: Yeah. You gotta remember from my mouth, a medium is like high intensity. I have a very wussy mouth when it comes to this.
Yeah. Oh, it's horrible.
[00:19:27] Speaker C: Problem is older I get, the more I get like that too.
[00:19:30] Speaker B: Do you?
[00:19:30] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:19:31] Speaker B: Yeah. But you used. You used to eat stuff that shot flames out your butt afterwards.
[00:19:35] Speaker C: I mean, I still do, just not intentionally.
[00:19:38] Speaker B: Yeah, it's. Yeah, that's got some kick.
Whoo. All right, so woman's got to have it, but hot doritos dinamita is probably not what she's asking for.
So unless anyone else has anything else to say, I think we're good on this one.
[00:19:55] Speaker A: I'm looking at these out of this song, but you know, the. Joey. Whatever.
[00:20:01] Speaker B: Yeah, dude, you're still.
[00:20:03] Speaker A: Bro, they. I'm looking at pictures and stuff, and it just reminds me of Eastie boys.
[00:20:08] Speaker B: Just looking at him.
[00:20:09] Speaker A: What they're doing.
[00:20:10] Speaker B: I haven't seen. Like I said, I have not read. He just played it for me. Play the beginning of hooligans or hooligan like, right now.
[00:20:19] Speaker C: Yeah, you heard me.
[00:20:23] Speaker B: He's looking at me like.
[00:20:27] Speaker A: I mean, I got it right here.
[00:20:28] Speaker B: So play it. He said play it.
[00:20:30] Speaker A: Well, because you was looking like you were gonna go grab it and do it.
[00:20:33] Speaker B: No.
[00:20:33] Speaker C: You wanna see something cool? No. Well, I'm gonna do it anyway.
[00:20:44] Speaker A: I can see.
[00:20:48] Speaker B: No, nobody can't do it like me.
[00:20:50] Speaker A: Zoo pous, plate with the kick quizzes.
[00:20:52] Speaker C: Okay, pause it.
[00:20:58] Speaker B: So, yeah, I mean, it's very beasty.
[00:21:01] Speaker A: That is so.
[00:21:01] Speaker B: Check them out, guys. If you like Beastie boys, check them out.
[00:21:06] Speaker A: That is crazy.
[00:21:07] Speaker B: Isn't that good?
[00:21:07] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:21:08] Speaker B: Yeah. Anyway, I think we are good for this episode. The woman's gotta have it.
[00:21:14] Speaker A: If you want to check us out on Facebook, you can check us out.
[00:21:19] Speaker B: Yeah. We are on Facebook.

[00:21:49] Speaker B: No, you just point. You point down.
[00:21:53] Speaker A: You told me this, like, episodes back, and so I still laugh about it, cuz.
[00:21:59] Speaker B: Cuz we're pointing down.
