[00:00:00] Speaker A: It is now disclaimer time. [00:00:02] Speaker B: We are here to share Prince's works with the utmost authenticity, clarity, and precision. This means there may be situations where the material being discussed may be sensitive or offensive to some. However, we have chosen to discuss his work as it was initially produced. We will not alter any of his original work to suit anyone's comfort, including our own. This podcast is to celebrate Prince and his works. [00:00:29] Speaker C: Thank you for your support and understanding. Now on to the show. [00:00:36] Speaker A: Hello. Welcome to Alphabet Suite podcast for the Prince Songbook. There are hundreds of songs to choose from. You have chosen. [00:00:49] Speaker D: We really need to get that closer to you. [00:00:52] Speaker A: Yes. [00:00:54] Speaker D: I miss your cute sound effects. [00:00:58] Speaker C: You what, mate? [00:00:59] Speaker D: I said we need to get that closer to you. I miss your cute sound effects. [00:01:03] Speaker C: I mean, I'm still doing the sound effects. [00:01:05] Speaker D: Oh, okay. Anyway, welcome, guys. It's time for the next episode of the Alphabet Suite podcast. I am one of your hosts, Pat. [00:01:18] Speaker A: I am the other host, Tim. [00:01:21] Speaker C: I ain't a host. [00:01:22] Speaker D: Producer Aaron. Rock on Rock. [00:01:25] Speaker A: Did he say, I am not a hoe? [00:01:27] Speaker D: Well, he would be lying. [00:01:29] Speaker A: Can we rewind that? I was. [00:01:34] Speaker D: I'm not a hoe. I'm not a hoe. [00:01:37] Speaker A: All right, so. [00:01:41] Speaker D: We go from Prince. [00:01:46] Speaker A: To the King and not the King of Pop. [00:01:53] Speaker D: People call him the King of Pop, but I don't think he's. [00:01:55] Speaker A: He's a putz anyway. [00:01:57] Speaker D: You must become a prince before you're king anyway. [00:01:59] Speaker A: Got that right. [00:02:01] Speaker D: No, the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. And we are going to talk about All Shake up, which is an Elvis song that Prince covered. Now, they say there's a studio version of this out there. I have yet to hear it, but he did do a live version that he broadcast on ThirdEye TV, and we got that. So we did get to hear that. And you guys, again, if you check out our sister station, that will eventually get posted. [00:02:32] Speaker A: Yeah, buddy. [00:02:33] Speaker D: You know, because we try to post as much of this music as YouTube will let us without blocking us. [00:02:42] Speaker A: How much the difference the studio version would be? [00:02:46] Speaker D: Well, that's. I would think he was usually. Well, I can't even say that because he's changed a lot of songs from studio to live, but he usually tries to keep it somewhat recognizable. So if. If the studio version is. Is like the live version, I think it'd be really good, you know, because he really. You know, when you listen to Elvis, I mean, again, music back then was, you know, not as full as it is nowadays with all the instruments and the production and all that. So it was pretty Stripped down. So having Prince bring all his instruments and live music always sounds better anyway. [00:03:30] Speaker A: Normally, yeah. [00:03:32] Speaker D: I mean. Sounds better live, huh? [00:03:34] Speaker C: Sounds better. Live music will sound better on a disc. [00:03:39] Speaker D: No, but you. If you go to a live show, music sounds really. [00:03:42] Speaker A: I mean, I've heard people that are just horrible. [00:03:44] Speaker D: Okay, look, I'm gonna. I'm gonna set the record straight right now. I went to the whole Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison super tour that got postponed for three years because of COVID And I heard before I went because we didn't get to see the very first show. You know, our show was later on down the road and I heard all of this stuff and I even heard Vince sing it, and he sounded horrible. [00:04:10] Speaker C: Horrible. [00:04:12] Speaker D: We went to see him live. The music was so loud and the crowd was singing so loud it covered up his voice. He sounded great. [00:04:20] Speaker A: Thank God for that. [00:04:21] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:04:22] Speaker D: I mean, because half the time he was so out of breath, he wasn't singing. He was letting the crowd do the singing anyway. And the music covered. It blended. But when you hear that live recording, even though it's a live recording and you hear it, you can still hear how crappy he sounds. [00:04:36] Speaker C: So I imagine the energy is always better live. [00:04:38] Speaker D: Oh, yeah. Big time. Big time. [00:04:41] Speaker A: Axl Rose is another. [00:04:42] Speaker D: Just horrible. [00:04:44] Speaker A: Horrible singing live. Yeah, I just. [00:04:46] Speaker D: Well, I'm. [00:04:47] Speaker A: Especially since he got fat and just like. [00:04:50] Speaker D: I've never been a fan of him anyway. [00:04:53] Speaker A: I haven't been a fan of him, but Guns N Roses, you know, I was, you know, Appetite, destruction, whatever the heck that was called. The first one. [00:05:02] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:05:02] Speaker A: Okay. And then they went, I don't know, bizarre after that to me, so. And then now Slash, on the other hand. You know, I love this guitarian. [00:05:11] Speaker D: Well, guitars. [00:05:12] Speaker A: Guitars, you know, really good at it, though. Anyway, we're not talking about Metallica. [00:05:15] Speaker C: Sounds a great live. [00:05:17] Speaker D: I want to know. [00:05:18] Speaker A: I like Metallica. [00:05:18] Speaker C: So does Ghost. Ghost sounds amazing live. Yeah, they sound better than the album. [00:05:22] Speaker A: Wow. We just. [00:05:24] Speaker D: Prince sounds amazing live too. [00:05:25] Speaker A: We just brought back a name we haven't heard in many, many episodes. [00:05:28] Speaker D: Ghost. Ghost is actually. Aaron introduced me to Ghost and what he has played for me, I actually like. [00:05:35] Speaker C: Okay, I cherry pick for you. [00:05:37] Speaker D: I appreciate it. I know one artist, so to show how much live music really affects people, at least me, anyway. There's an artist that I didn't even like. I want nothing to do with them until I went to see him live. MC Hammer. [00:05:55] Speaker A: Let's see. I like MC Hammer. [00:05:56] Speaker D: Okay, but do you remember when you won the MC Hammer tickets on the radio show. We could not give those tickets away. [00:06:05] Speaker A: Right? [00:06:05] Speaker D: We tried. We didn't. We tried to sell them at first, but no one wanted to buy them. And then we tried to give them away because at the time neither one of us wanted to go see MC Hammer. You just did it because you were always good at winning stuff on the radio. And do you remember. So I don't know if you remember this, but when you won those tickets, do you remember what you said? Because when you said it, I thought for sure they're gonna bleep it. Cause they always record you winning the phone call and everything and then they play it back. But when you won it, you were like, oh yeah, did I really? I mean just loud. And I'm like yeah, that's gonna get bleeped. And they didn't. They played that on the radio. I remember that. They actually played that the radio. So we tried to give these tickets away. Could not give them away. [00:06:57] Speaker C: Was it because he was so counterculture? [00:07:00] Speaker D: Who? MC Hammer? [00:07:01] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:07:01] Speaker D: No, I just didn't. I wasn't huge. [00:07:03] Speaker C: No, not for you. I mean why, like just kind of throwing out there, like why you couldn't, you know, give the tickets away? [00:07:11] Speaker D: I. Well because so at this time this was back in what, 91 90, 91. 92. Ish. And our, the people we ran with, the people that we, we hung with, everyone that we knew were rockers. [00:07:33] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:07:34] Speaker D: And so trying to talk to all the, our family and friends and everyone were like, hey, you want to go see a concert? They're like, yeah, it's free. Cool. Who is it? It's MC Hammer. No, dude, I'll pass. Thanks anyway. And I'm like, but it's a free concert, man. No, that's all right. So I would have gone, well, you weren't alive back then. [00:07:58] Speaker C: True. It was pre 92. [00:08:01] Speaker D: Yeah, it was. It was before you were born. Yeah. So, uhoh. [00:08:05] Speaker C: I just aged myself. [00:08:06] Speaker D: Oh, they're going to look me up now. So we tried to give these tickets away. Couldn't do it. And we're like, man, it'd just be a shame to waste them. So me and Tim ended up going and I. Perfect. [00:08:20] Speaker C: A little date night. [00:08:21] Speaker D: Well yeah, your mom stayed with grandma and grandpa. She's like. Cause the venue was, you know, just not that far. We could walk to the venue from my parents house. [00:08:32] Speaker C: Oh, sick. Yeah, those are the best. [00:08:34] Speaker D: Yeah. So we drove over there and we stopped. I mean it wasn't like a, a short walk, but it was only like A mile or two. It wasn't that far. And so we walked down there, we walked back. And I got to tell you, watching MC Hammer perform live was just freaking amazing. I'm not even going to lie. I went out. He only had two CDs out at the time, and. And I bought them both. I was like, they're on the spot. I mean, I walked out in the. [00:09:05] Speaker C: Middle of the show, right. And I picked them up. [00:09:09] Speaker D: So. So live music is really good. You know, it switches my mind because he just performed and performed and performed, and the, like, he's. Aaron, like you said, the energy that you're feeling, it's like nothing else, man. [00:09:24] Speaker C: Well, that's why Ghost shows, they're not called concerts. They're called rituals. [00:09:30] Speaker D: Rituals. [00:09:30] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:09:31] Speaker D: I thought that was just because he does. [00:09:32] Speaker C: I mean, it's contextual for the. For what he does, the facade that they present. [00:09:36] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. [00:09:37] Speaker C: I mean, it's. It's so. And they did. [00:09:40] Speaker D: Have you seen him live yet? Ghost? Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:09:44] Speaker C: We're going again this year, too. [00:09:45] Speaker D: Are you? Yeah. Cool. It is just amazing. [00:09:50] Speaker C: It made listening to the album harder because live it was so much better. [00:09:56] Speaker D: Yeah. And that's the downside. When you hear good music live and then you got to go back and grab the studio music, you're like, this kind of sucks. [00:10:06] Speaker C: I mean, I would go as far as to say they suck, but, like. [00:10:09] Speaker D: The energy's not there. [00:10:10] Speaker C: The energy level. Like, there's more power in the music, and, you know, it's all, you know, driving electric guitars, all this other stuff. But he also adds in, like, the. The backing vocals with the goulettes that just bring this whole other level of depth to the songs that just changes everything. [00:10:31] Speaker D: Yeah. Live music just kicks. Remember the first time we saw Prince? Life. [00:10:36] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. [00:10:38] Speaker C: Nope. [00:10:38] Speaker D: Nope. Yeah, we went to the Love Sexy tour, man, and it was just. It was amazing. [00:10:48] Speaker C: I mean, I don't think I ever got to see Prince with you guys. [00:10:51] Speaker D: No, you didn't. [00:10:53] Speaker C: Got to see Def Leppard, though, a. [00:10:54] Speaker D: Couple times, didn't you? Did you go with this? [00:10:56] Speaker C: I only remember one, because that's still, to this day, the only show. I walked out of the venue not being able to hear well because we. [00:11:03] Speaker D: Were pretty close to the stage, too. [00:11:05] Speaker C: And I was young. [00:11:06] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:11:06] Speaker C: But, yeah, I could not hear anything. Yeah, it was incredible. So, anyway, I think Weird Al's cool, too. If he tours around us again, we should definitely try to go. [00:11:18] Speaker D: Yeah, but with Weird Al, you left and ran down and bum rushed the stage. [00:11:22] Speaker C: Did I. [00:11:23] Speaker D: Yes, you and your sisters. [00:11:25] Speaker A: Wow. [00:11:26] Speaker D: The only one who stayed with us was Stacia. [00:11:30] Speaker C: Well, I was a silly kid. [00:11:32] Speaker D: You and your two older ones bum rushed the stage and we're like, don't go down there. Like we can get close. And you did sick. [00:11:39] Speaker C: I don't remember that. Yeah, I just remember him coming out for fat. [00:11:43] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:11:44] Speaker C: Dressed up. [00:11:45] Speaker D: Yep. [00:11:45] Speaker C: That's good. [00:11:46] Speaker D: He's actually on tour now. I think he is coming somewhere close to us. [00:11:49] Speaker C: Oh snap. [00:11:51] Speaker D: So anyways, so all shook up. [00:11:55] Speaker C: Uh huh. [00:11:56] Speaker D: We have not heard the studio version, but we did hear the live version that was broadcast on Third Eye tv. What do you think of it, Sir Timmy T? [00:12:09] Speaker A: Funky. [00:12:10] Speaker D: Funky. Yeah, yeah. [00:12:12] Speaker A: I mean. [00:12:16] Speaker D: You'Re not a novice fan, right? Or are you? [00:12:19] Speaker A: I do not like Elvis much. You know, never have I like Elvis. I've, you know, over the years had to listen to tons of his crap. I mean music, you know, my mom. [00:12:34] Speaker D: And she and Elvis fan. Yeah, yeah. [00:12:36] Speaker A: And you know, so. And then, you know, when your sister would come over and they play cards, they'd turn on the oldie station, we'd have to listen all that. [00:12:45] Speaker C: Oh yeah, she loved Elvis. [00:12:47] Speaker A: And never. [00:12:48] Speaker D: No, he's talking about Aunt Karen. No, Aunt Wendy. [00:12:51] Speaker C: Not the cool one. [00:12:54] Speaker D: Aunt Wendy. [00:12:54] Speaker A: Cool one. [00:12:55] Speaker C: Aunt Wendy's great. [00:12:56] Speaker A: Let me tell you a story. Story time. [00:12:59] Speaker D: Story time with. [00:13:00] Speaker C: Oh, here we go. [00:13:00] Speaker A: I went into a local bar with a local person that, you know, who. [00:13:09] Speaker D: Just happened to be your Aunt Wendy's daughter. [00:13:11] Speaker A: Yeah. And I'm standing there waiting for her to come back from the bar part. And she left me with your aunt. And she turned to me, I wasn't even talking to her. Customer left, she turned to me and she said, if I had a gun right now, I would shoot you. [00:13:37] Speaker D: And she was serious. [00:13:38] Speaker A: Yes. I said. [00:13:42] Speaker D: Okay, what do you say to that? I'm glad you don't have a gun. Right. [00:13:49] Speaker C: I guess that's what you get for dating my family. [00:13:54] Speaker D: All right, so anyway, anyway. [00:13:56] Speaker A: Yeah, not. Definitely not big on Elvis, the princess, you know, I mean. Yeah. You know, like you said, you know, all the. It was just stripped down back in Elvis day. And you get all this and I just think it was a little too much, you know, too much music for. [00:14:13] Speaker D: The song or just too much music period. Just because Prince is always about a lot of music. [00:14:18] Speaker A: I know he is. [00:14:19] Speaker D: He always has like a whole entourage of musicians. [00:14:23] Speaker A: And I just think for that song, I just think it was just. Yeah, yeah, it was just me. I didn't recognize the song until like it kept going, going until the lyrics. Yeah. Then. Then I'm like. Even he's saying it different, you know. [00:14:39] Speaker D: Oh, yeah. [00:14:40] Speaker A: But I mean, it was funky and it sounded good, but to me it's just too much music, you know? He had John Blackwell on that one, too. [00:14:47] Speaker D: Yeah, on the drums. [00:14:48] Speaker A: He died. [00:14:50] Speaker C: Wow. [00:14:51] Speaker A: I didn't know that. Did you know that. [00:14:57] Speaker D: I had heard something? Because it wasn't long ago that it happened. [00:15:01] Speaker C: That was one hell of a U turn, right? [00:15:04] Speaker D: Take it dark, man. [00:15:05] Speaker A: Eight years ago. [00:15:06] Speaker D: Dude, was it eight? I didn't think it was that long ago. [00:15:08] Speaker A: And, you know, he was only one year younger than me. [00:15:15] Speaker D: Really? [00:15:16] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:17] Speaker C: At the time that he passed. Or one year younger than you now. [00:15:20] Speaker A: No, I'm not going to say because I'm not going to do an age thing. It doesn't matter. They'll figure it out, right? Y'all did it yourselves. But. Yeah, I didn't know he passed away in. I thought he was a good drummer, you know. [00:15:33] Speaker D: Oh, yeah, he was. He was a good drummer. [00:15:34] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:35] Speaker D: Do you realize when you stop and think, I mean, I know, and I don't want to get stuck on this whole death thing because I know people die all the time, but when you stop and you look at the people in Prince's orbit that have died, I mean, that's a lot. Vanity died young. Cat just died recently. She was young. John Blackwell was young. Bonnie Boyer was young. You know, I mean, and there's more. That's just like the. It's just crazy. [00:16:08] Speaker A: It is. [00:16:08] Speaker C: You know, and Prince died in the music industry, unfortunately. [00:16:12] Speaker D: I know it's sad, but what a lot of them are dying from is not like Prince. We know drug overdose, right? Vanity was drug related. She had got off drugs and got clean, but the damage it did to her body. Her body just gave up. You, if I remember right, was cancer. And, you know, there's been heart attacks. There's been. I mean, just all sorts of crazy stuff going on, man. [00:16:40] Speaker A: Stress, you know, it's just not really the. Just the dying ones, you know? I mean, look at Jill Jones. She's nuts. You know, Apollonia. I don't know what sometimes. What the hell she's even talking about. She wrote this and she wrote that for Prince and. No, you didn't do none of. [00:16:56] Speaker D: We don't know that. [00:16:57] Speaker A: They get nuts. Ah, come on, man. [00:16:59] Speaker D: They get nuts. [00:17:00] Speaker A: They get nuts. You know what? I was just rambling through. I just wanted to share this with you, okay? And I clicked on, you know, Rhonda Smith you know, and it wants to take me to the MPG page. [00:17:15] Speaker D: Okay. [00:17:16] Speaker A: So I click on that. [00:17:17] Speaker D: Okay. [00:17:18] Speaker A: The original lineup. Okay. Now, one would think the dumbest looking one in this photo would be that goofball with that big giant thing on his head called a hat. I guess. I don't know what that is. I don't. [00:17:32] Speaker D: A 24 piece bucket of chicken. [00:17:33] Speaker A: Yes. There we go. [00:17:35] Speaker D: Hell, yeah. [00:17:35] Speaker A: But he's not the dumbest looking one in the picture. [00:17:39] Speaker D: Let me guess. Tony. [00:17:41] Speaker A: You got it. He's the dumbest looking. I'm just saying. And Rosie, she shouldn't even. [00:17:47] Speaker C: For the hundredth episode. [00:17:49] Speaker A: No. [00:17:49] Speaker D: Get Tony on. [00:17:50] Speaker A: No. [00:17:51] Speaker D: Hey, there we go. And tell him you need to go back and watch all our episodes before you. Come on. [00:17:59] Speaker A: Rosie's just, like, misplaced and just. She doesn't look like she should be in that picture. And that other guy. That. The little white guy that. [00:18:07] Speaker D: The other guy? [00:18:08] Speaker A: Yeah, the white guy. The only white guy there. [00:18:10] Speaker D: Tommy Barbarella. [00:18:11] Speaker A: Yeah. He's. No. [00:18:14] Speaker D: Okay. [00:18:15] Speaker A: He doesn't look right there neither. [00:18:16] Speaker D: No, no, no. Okay. I think this has got Timmy all shook up. Yeah. [00:18:24] Speaker A: Yeah, that was. That was pretty good. Where is. [00:18:29] Speaker C: So I want to say that I liked it. [00:18:31] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:18:32] Speaker C: You played it down here. [00:18:34] Speaker D: Yep. And you got to hear a little bit of the funk. [00:18:37] Speaker C: I got to hear a little bit of it. I enjoyed every bit of it so much. So I'm gonna show it to my special lady who happens to really like Elvis, if she doesn't already know about it. [00:18:47] Speaker D: Cause she does like Prince, too. She does. [00:18:49] Speaker C: So anyway, you know what she also likes? [00:18:54] Speaker D: What? [00:18:55] Speaker C: Making money. Like with our partner, Castos. [00:18:58] Speaker D: Whoa. Kastos, for all your podcasting needs, why. [00:19:03] Speaker A: You always gotta steal my thing? [00:19:04] Speaker D: Well, because you didn't do it before, so I didn't think. I figured. You're so old, you probably forgot. I bet John Blackwell, who was one year younger than you, would not have. [00:19:13] Speaker C: Forgotten that extra 365 days of brain. [00:19:18] Speaker D: Right? [00:19:18] Speaker A: You know last year. [00:19:20] Speaker D: I do know last year. Very well. [00:19:22] Speaker A: We did an episode on my birthday. [00:19:24] Speaker D: Yeah, I think it was last year. We did not do it this year, though. [00:19:27] Speaker A: No, we didn't. [00:19:28] Speaker D: So. But happy birthday since it did just pass. [00:19:31] Speaker A: Oh, thank you. [00:19:32] Speaker D: You're welcome. [00:19:32] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. [00:19:33] Speaker C: Happy birthday. [00:19:34] Speaker A: Thank you. [00:19:35] Speaker C: Get Tony on the show. Wish you happy birthday. [00:19:37] Speaker D: Yeah.
