Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: It is now disclaimer time.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: We are here to share Prince's works with the utmost authenticity, clarity, and precision. This means there may be situations where the material being discussed may be sensitive or offensive to some. However, we have chosen to discuss his work as it was initially produced. We will not alter any of his original work to suit anyone's comfort, including our own. This podcast is to celebrate Prince and his works.
[00:00:29] Speaker C: Thank you for your support and understanding. Now on to the show.
[00:00:36] Speaker D: Hello. Welcome to Alphabet Suite podcast for the Prince Songbook. There are hundreds of songs to choose from. You have chosen.
[00:00:52] Speaker E: Where as ready as we're gonna be.
[00:00:53] Speaker A: Oh, poo poo.
Oh, sorry.
[00:01:00] Speaker C: You just poo pooed over the sparkle.
[00:01:02] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, sorry. Can I get another sparkle? Oh, no. Because then you had to get up.
[00:01:06] Speaker E: No, you just go.
[00:01:08] Speaker C: No, this is staying in.
[00:01:09] Speaker A: Oh, well, all right. Okay. Welcome back to another episode of Alphabet Sweet Pot Podcast. I'm trying to turn my volume off. I am your host, Timothy.
[00:01:24] Speaker E: Your volume never goes off, man. We've tried. I've tried to turn your volume off for 50 years, and it doesn't work.
[00:01:31] Speaker A: Yeah, okay.
[00:01:33] Speaker C: Anyway, aging yourself.
[00:01:35] Speaker E: Sh.
I'm counting the years that I was in the womb.
I. I stayed in the womb for quite a while.
[00:01:42] Speaker C: 42 of them.
[00:01:43] Speaker E: Right? Yeah.
Anyway, I'm your co host, Pat, and I'm producer Aaron. Rock on.
[00:01:53] Speaker A: So.
[00:01:55] Speaker E: So look, his volume's down.
[00:02:00] Speaker A: We are discussing all my dreams.
[00:02:06] Speaker E: All of your dreams?
[00:02:07] Speaker A: All of them.
[00:02:07] Speaker E: All of them.
[00:02:08] Speaker A: Every one of them, man.
[00:02:09] Speaker E: This could be a very long episode. Unless you don't have many dreams.
[00:02:13] Speaker A: Well, I got that medicine that they give me that, you know, they gave the kids in Freddy movie, so I don't dream. So I'm pretty good. Just a few dreams.
[00:02:23] Speaker C: Speaking of long episodes, do you want to make an announcement or do you want to hold off on that?
[00:02:30] Speaker E: Well, I mean, we can make the announcement.
[00:02:34] Speaker A: Am I clueless on this announcement? Because I.
[00:02:36] Speaker E: You probably are. You're clueless on pretty much everything.
[00:02:39] Speaker A: I am. See, look at.
[00:02:41] Speaker E: Okay, but we have. Well, we've talked about it a little bit. We have our 100th episode coming up, so we're trying.
[00:02:50] Speaker C: It just so happens to be right.
[00:02:53] Speaker E: I mean, this is just perfect, perfect timing. Our hundredth episode is actually going to be Alphabet street, so just a little foreshadowing there. We're trying to do something. We're going to do something cool and special one way or another. We've got things in the works that we're trying to put together and backup plans to the backup plans. And so there's going to be something cool. It'll probably be a longer episode than normal, so just be prepared.
[00:03:24] Speaker A: Guys, how many backup plans or backup plans do you have?
[00:03:29] Speaker E: All of them.
[00:03:29] Speaker A: All of them?
[00:03:30] Speaker E: All of them.
[00:03:31] Speaker A: Are they all in your dreams?
[00:03:33] Speaker E: We're trying to make some of them reality.
[00:03:34] Speaker A: Reality. Oh.
[00:03:35] Speaker C: And regardless of how the episode goes, this will result in new free tier Patreon content.
[00:03:44] Speaker E: Yeah, we're gonna have free stuff to give you guys a taste of what goes on on our Patreon page.
[00:03:50] Speaker A: Free is good.
[00:03:51] Speaker E: Free is always good.
[00:03:52] Speaker A: You know what?
[00:03:53] Speaker E: What?
[00:03:53] Speaker A: Speaking of Patreon, they didn't take my money out this month, so somebody didn't get paid.
[00:04:01] Speaker E: Uh.
[00:04:01] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. I went back on it and I'm like, I can't see nothing.
[00:04:06] Speaker E: That means you don't get to see all the bonus content.
[00:04:08] Speaker A: So it's horrible.
[00:04:10] Speaker E: So you gotta watch the episodes with ads.
[00:04:13] Speaker A: Yeah, I hate ads. Horrible. Unless, you know, it's like.
[00:04:19] Speaker E: Unless you get back on Patreon.
[00:04:20] Speaker A: Yeah, man. So anyway, that would have been a great segue.
[00:04:25] Speaker E: What.
[00:04:26] Speaker A: What was this? You know, ads. I said, man, I don't like ads. And then I could have laid into. Unless it's from our people.
[00:04:35] Speaker E: Our people?
[00:04:36] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:04:36] Speaker C: Castos.
[00:04:37] Speaker E: Castos.
[00:04:37] Speaker A: Yeah. See, that would have been a good segue I've never had.
[00:04:39] Speaker E: What about Castos in our people? Well, you know, but we do partner with them.
[00:04:44] Speaker A: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. They would have been.
[00:04:46] Speaker E: Forget about it.
[00:04:47] Speaker C: Let's start with.
[00:04:47] Speaker E: Let's.
[00:04:48] Speaker C: Let's start it this time. Let's start with snack time.
[00:04:51] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:04:51] Speaker A: What the.
[00:04:52] Speaker E: So, thank you, Castos. We partner with them because.
[00:04:56] Speaker A: Can we bleep all that out?
[00:04:58] Speaker E: No, we don't bleep anything.
[00:05:00] Speaker C: I only bleep swear words.
[00:05:01] Speaker A: I wanted to go into my.
So do you do your segue? No, it's just. It's broken, though.
[00:05:06] Speaker E: It's broken. You broke your segue.
[00:05:08] Speaker C: Duct tape it back together. Let's go.
[00:05:09] Speaker A: Yeah. All right.
[00:05:11] Speaker C: So don't be scared.
[00:05:12] Speaker E: Anyway, with Castos, man, you get all the podcasting platforms. You know, you get multiple services.
[00:05:19] Speaker C: Like, tell them about what you just.
[00:05:21] Speaker E: Discovered the other day. Oh, dude. So the coolest thing I was, you know, working up, trying to get music for the podcast and finding all the covers and the samples and all that. And I was on Spotify and I found our podcast on Spotify.
We are on Spotify. We're like, officially a podcast, so it was kind of cool. So, yes, Castless will put you on Spotify. They put us on Spotify. They have unlimited uploads and downloads. They have automated transcriptions, fixed monthly pricing. I mean, not just Spotify. We can go on Amazon Music, YouTube, Apple podcast. You know, I'm going to search some other ones and see if we're on there.
[00:06:03] Speaker A: Yeah. Even if, you know, they're not, like, showing. I mean, it's ones that we never even heard of.
[00:06:10] Speaker E: Exactly.
[00:06:11] Speaker C: And it's all on the base tier.
[00:06:12] Speaker E: All on the base tier. So. Yeah.
[00:06:14] Speaker C: And they have a feature where you can record directly on the website now.
[00:06:21] Speaker E: Which we don't do. But you can do it.
[00:06:23] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:06:24] Speaker E: If you want.
[00:06:24] Speaker C: So I don't know how it works. Use the links in the description below and let me know.
[00:06:29] Speaker E: Yeah. And what happens when you use those links?
You get a 14 day free trial of Kastos.
[00:06:36] Speaker A: Free is good.
[00:06:37] Speaker E: Free is good.
[00:06:38] Speaker A: I like free.
[00:06:39] Speaker E: Now we get some free snacks.
And we're all going to be surprised because producer Aaron went shopping this time.
[00:06:49] Speaker A: That's.
[00:06:50] Speaker E: Which usually means we're gonna have something super sour or super hot.
[00:06:54] Speaker A: Yeah, super scary.
[00:06:56] Speaker E: Super scary.
So what do we got, producer here?
Oh, something special for me?
Oh, cheese pizza. Flavored Chester Cheetahs.
Huh.
And these snacks are enlarged to show their texture.
[00:07:18] Speaker A: This sounds horrible. Why would you do that?
[00:07:21] Speaker E: I mean, no, because think about it. It's a Cheetos. Yeah, but so it should. I mean, cheese pizza. Can you smell the freshness? Oh, I haven't even opened the bag. Nope. You can't smell it.
[00:07:37] Speaker A: Ooh, steak.
[00:07:38] Speaker E: Yeah, that was bad.
I hope it tastes better than it smells.
Oh, never podcast on an empty stomach.
Okay, well, they look like regular Cheetos.
They sure don't smell like regular Cheetos. Don't stick your nose in there, dude. Yeah, see, I tried to warn you.
[00:08:02] Speaker A: What is.
You know, there was a. A girl once, I'm sure there was.
[00:08:08] Speaker E: A girl that smelled like that.
[00:08:11] Speaker A: Horrible.
[00:08:16] Speaker E: It just smells like factory pizza.
Smells like factory pizza.
It tastes like factory pizza.
[00:08:35] Speaker A: It tastes like factory ass.
[00:08:38] Speaker E: You think so?
[00:08:39] Speaker A: Oh, you like these, don't you?
[00:08:40] Speaker E: Yeah, I don't think it tastes too bad.
I don't think it tastes like cheese pizza.
I'm getting a weird flavor, but I don't know if.
Tomato.
Trying to replicate the sauce.
A little heavy on the tank.
[00:09:03] Speaker A: It's that one. Strong. The strongest flavor that I can't get past that.
[00:09:10] Speaker E: I think that's the tomato.
[00:09:12] Speaker A: That's horrible.
[00:09:13] Speaker E: Don't you like tomatoes?
[00:09:15] Speaker A: Yes, but not this. This isn't. This is factory.
[00:09:19] Speaker E: Factory tomatoes.
[00:09:20] Speaker A: Horrible.
Do you not see what they do to them poor tomatoes saying.
[00:09:28] Speaker E: Oh, they live a good life until then.
Yeah, give me a couple more of those. I'm gonna eat some of them.
Okay. So thank you, Castles for partnering with us.
[00:09:40] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:09:41] Speaker E: On snack time. Even though I don't think producer. Well, I think producer Aaron likes them. I do. Yeah.
They do not save them anytime.
[00:09:50] Speaker A: So they should be very limited.
[00:09:52] Speaker E: So anyone who wants some of these cheese pizza flavored cheese puffs, Chester Cheetah.
[00:09:57] Speaker C: Cheetos, you should be able to get them at Woodman's.
[00:10:00] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:10:00] Speaker C: So they're probably everywhere.
There are some limited times in here.
[00:10:05] Speaker E: So. Okay.
[00:10:07] Speaker C: I don't know how relevant they will be by the time we have these episodes come out.
[00:10:12] Speaker A: And then there's also some people out there like, what the hell's Woodman's?
[00:10:18] Speaker E: They're a regional thing.
All right.
[00:10:22] Speaker C: I bet you can find them at Walmart.
[00:10:24] Speaker E: Oh, I'm sure you can find them anywhere.
[00:10:27] Speaker C: Thanks, Gastos.
And thank you for clicking the links in the description below.
[00:10:34] Speaker E: All right, now my Timmy T recovers from those Cheetos.
We're gonna talk about all my dreams.
[00:10:46] Speaker C: I've been dreaming about these Cheetos for a while.
[00:10:49] Speaker E: Yeah, that was one of your dreams.
[00:10:52] Speaker C: I've had them down here for a hot minute.
It's been like three weeks.
[00:10:58] Speaker E: Well, now you get to eat them. Yeah.
So all my dreams.
I gotta. I'm gonna share something with you.
That really kind of freaked me out when I discovered this. So this is a song. I've known about this song for decades. We found this back on a bootleg, late 80s, early 90s. Somewhere in there we had it. So I've known this song.
They finally did a legitimate release on the Sign of the times super deluxe thing. So we have the actual song now.
And there was no. I cannot find any covers, but I found a sample.
Don't give me that look.
Prince sampled something and put it in this song.
One would think it was music.
Oh, no, my friend, he sampled. There was this interview back in the 80s with a guy and I've never been able to pronounce his name. I've seen it all over in the music business called Jean Michael and his last name is J A R R E. So I don't know if it's Jarre. He's French.
[00:12:29] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:12:30] Speaker E: He did this like 15 minute long interview. Yeah, I hear that bag just a crumbling in the studio. Sorry.
Where he's sitting in front of this really, really 80s computer and he's talking about how to use this computer. But he's talking in French, so I don't really understand what he's saying.
And he plays this sound that Prince sampled for the music. That's pretty cool. So he sampled an interview.
So, yeah, I mean, I didn't know I got the interview. I downloaded it.
So on our sister station, the Alphabet Suite playlist, in the near future, we will upload this video and you can hear where Prince samples this sound that is made on the computer.
[00:13:32] Speaker A: That is weird.
[00:13:33] Speaker E: It is weird. I didn't know what to do. I'm like, do I get that?
What do I do with that? It's not a song, but he's creating a song. He's showing how he can create music because he's like a techno guy. He makes techno music.
I think he's more of a producer, though. I don't know. I don't know a whole lot about him. I just know I've seen his name a lot.
So I was like, well, let me just grab that interview and. And we'll go from there. So we'll upload it and you'll.
You'll see where. Where Prince sampled a computer from an interview.
[00:14:16] Speaker A: And that's kind of.
Yeah, yeah.
[00:14:23] Speaker E: Kind of unique.
[00:14:24] Speaker A: It is very much so.
[00:14:27] Speaker E: So I wanted to get that out there before we actually start talking about the song.
[00:14:32] Speaker A: Well, thank you for sharing that.
[00:14:34] Speaker E: Well, that's what we're here to do, right?
[00:14:36] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:37] Speaker E: Share what we got.
[00:14:39] Speaker A: So this song is actually 7 minutes and 23 seconds. Seconds long.
[00:14:45] Speaker E: Is it?
[00:14:46] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:14:48] Speaker E: Well. And what's weird is they say there's an unreleased version which is the same song.
It just.
When he was actually going to release the song on.
On the album. I forget what album he was going to release it on, but he had it blended to where you had the little bit of the song before it. That plate, you know, kind of blended into this one.
[00:15:18] Speaker A: Right, right.
[00:15:18] Speaker E: And so that's technically. That's the other version, the unreleased version.
So, I mean, we'll put it out there where you can hear it. But it really is the same song that.
From the other one, you know, but. So what do you think of the song now that we're.
[00:15:42] Speaker A: Let me look at my notes.
[00:15:45] Speaker E: Can you read it without your glasses?
[00:15:47] Speaker A: I can. It's hard to see my computer, though, without them.
[00:15:49] Speaker E: But that's why I'm wearing mine.
[00:15:53] Speaker A: It's got a. Like a hint of jazziness going on there.
Did you get that?
[00:16:04] Speaker E: Kinda.
[00:16:08] Speaker A: So I'm not really.
Because I've had the. My notes. You Know, like, for two weeks now, so.
[00:16:15] Speaker E: So you've forgotten what the song sounds.
[00:16:17] Speaker A: Like or what I do remember, but I don't know. I. I put submarines, virgin seas, children being born. What more is there to say? Is he talking about cereal in the song as well?
I was just, like, totally confused with this song. I don't know. It was okay, but I just. I was really puzzled.
Yeah. Because I know.
Excuse me. Come with me.
Submarines, you know, virgins and children. I.
And I know he said something about cereal.
You laugh, but don't let me pull the lyrics up.
[00:17:03] Speaker E: I'm just saying we got the lyrics.
[00:17:06] Speaker A: I know we do, but I don't.
[00:17:07] Speaker E: Believe it says anything about cereal. I could be wrong.
So let me see what the lyrics say, because I don't. I'm pretty sure he doesn't talk about cereal.
Watch me find it.
Oh, he. He talks about Cheerios. He doesn't say cereal.
[00:17:30] Speaker A: But yeah, I mean, when I said cereal, it wasn't like I didn't want to bring the name out. Like, we're promoting Cheerios.
You know, the health.
[00:17:39] Speaker E: Yeah. Africa, Captain Crunch, Norma Jean sex and Cheerios.
[00:17:43] Speaker A: There we go. See?
[00:17:44] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:17:45] Speaker A: What the hell is that? Any of that mean?
[00:17:47] Speaker E: He's talking about his dreams.
[00:17:48] Speaker A: His dreams are crazy.
[00:17:50] Speaker E: Well, are your dreams not crazy?
Do you not have crazy dreams?
[00:18:00] Speaker A: Depends on if I'm on musical enhancers or not, but, yeah, that. It was just puzzling for me.
[00:18:09] Speaker E: Yeah. The whole song.
I don't know, man.
Like I said, I've known about the song. I've heard it. Because we've had it on bootlegs for, you know, years, probably, you know, 30 years.
I've never really.
Prince. Prince is very eclectic. He writes all sorts of weird stuff. I mean, he's all over the board with what he can write.
And this kind of felt like I was listening to, like, an old forties.
Like, coming through an old forties radio, you know?
[00:18:51] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:18:52] Speaker E: The whole. Everything about it felt to me like old, vintage. I shouldn't say old. It felt vintage.
[00:18:58] Speaker A: Vintage.
[00:18:59] Speaker E: You know what I mean?
Does that make sense?
[00:19:02] Speaker A: It does, but I don't know.
[00:19:06] Speaker E: So maybe it's vintage Cheerios or something. I don't know.
[00:19:09] Speaker A: I mean, there's good vintage and then there's Prince vintage.
[00:19:13] Speaker E: Yeah, but I don't know. I. I don't hate the song.
[00:19:19] Speaker A: Yeah. I mean, it's okay, you know, I.
[00:19:22] Speaker E: Can listen to it.
He was going to actually put this on parade, so it would have been in under the Cherry Moon in some way, shape or form. But He. He actually changed his mind, which I'm grateful for.
[00:19:35] Speaker A: Yes, thank you. You know, so trying to make Zoom my page in.
I'm already at 175 or something. Percent I didn't mean to cut you off.
[00:19:50] Speaker E: No, you're fine.
Then after that, he's gonna put it on the Dream Factory, which never got released, as we know.
That got canceled. But it was. He felt this song was good enough to be released, you know, and I was just.
[00:20:06] Speaker A: Whoa, whoa, whoa.
[00:20:09] Speaker E: Sorry.
[00:20:10] Speaker C: I'm downloading some of the things you sent me and I just saw the.
[00:20:13] Speaker E: Art you sent for Alphabet Street.
[00:20:14] Speaker C: I wasn't ready.
[00:20:17] Speaker E: Oh, Prince naked. Yeah.
On the COVID of Love Sexy.
So was that a good woe or a bad woe?
[00:20:29] Speaker C: That's. I was not ready for that.
[00:20:31] Speaker E: Well. Oh, so, yeah, I don't know.
[00:20:42] Speaker A: So a portion of a.
What distorted spoken section of this song was later reused and acknowledge me.
[00:21:01] Speaker E: Okay, so I'm reading another note.
Also the part that I found where he sampled from that.
[00:21:11] Speaker A: The hell was that?
[00:21:13] Speaker E: Sorry, that was. God scared.
[00:21:14] Speaker A: Oh, hey, where.
[00:21:17] Speaker E: I told you he sampled that interview thing.
I found some. Something that said it was used in our bizarre relationship by Frank Zampa.
[00:21:31] Speaker A: What the. Yeah, How'd you miss that before?
[00:21:37] Speaker E: Well, because it was one of the preset samples in this sample synthesizer.
So basically Frank Zappa used the same sample out of the synthesizer. And so apparently because I found the interview with that sample in didn't take me to Frank Zappa's thing. So technically Frank Zappa sampled the same thing. Prince, you know, there you go.
So it was a pre recorded sample is already set. And if you bought the Fairlight CMI sample synthesizer, which this interview is. He's working on that, showing you how it works. So Prince apparently had it. So it was a preloaded sample. So a lot of people probably used it, but he was one of them.
And apparently he used it In All My Dreams. Bob, George Christopher, Tracy's Parade, Love Sexy and Madhouse 9 and 6 all contain the same sample.
I am not gonna put it on all of them. You get it once and that's that, man.
[00:22:52] Speaker A: So look to the left.
No, that's the camera page.
[00:22:58] Speaker E: What?
[00:23:00] Speaker A: Where it says, see also.
[00:23:02] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:23:03] Speaker A: All My Dreams. Unreleased album.
[00:23:05] Speaker E: Yeah, yeah. He had never heard no. Anything about an All My Dreams album. No, neither did I.
But every time you turn around, there's another album that he announced that he never did.
So apparently All My Dreams is going to be one of them.
[00:23:24] Speaker A: And if you click on it and you know there Is currently. No text.
[00:23:29] Speaker E: Oh, nice. Okay, so. But yeah, I was not a huge fan of the song. Like I said, I felt like I was listening to a vintage radio, you know, kind of thing with the way he did it, you know?
[00:23:46] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:23:50] Speaker E: But anyway, that's all I got to say about that.
[00:23:55] Speaker A: You know what?
[00:23:56] Speaker E: What?
[00:23:57] Speaker A: I just had to watch that show the other day.
[00:23:59] Speaker E: Forrest Gump. What do you mean you had to?
[00:24:02] Speaker A: Well, my daughter and her boyfriend.
Ex. Boyfriend. I don't know. They were watching.
[00:24:10] Speaker E: Which daughter? The older.
[00:24:13] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:24:13] Speaker E: Okay.
[00:24:14] Speaker A: So they were watching it on my tv.
[00:24:17] Speaker E: Well, that would be a good place to watch it.
[00:24:20] Speaker A: Well, yeah, they could watch it on their own tv, but I don't. I don't really care for that show.
[00:24:25] Speaker E: No.
[00:24:25] Speaker A: No, I wouldn't.
