Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: It is now disclaimer time.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: We are here to share Prince's works with the utmost authenticity, clarity and precision. This means there may be situations where the material being discussed may be sensitive or offensive to some. However, we have chosen to discuss his work as it was initially produced. We will not alter any of his original work to suit anyone's comfort, including our own. This podcast is to celebrate Prince and his works.
[00:00:29] Speaker C: Thank you for your support and understanding. Now onto the show.
[00:00:35] Speaker D: Hello. Welcome to Alphabet Suite podcast for the Prince songbook. There are hundreds of songs to choose from. You have chosen.
[00:00:49] Speaker E: Where is it now? You gotta bring us in.
[00:00:55] Speaker A: Welcome to another episode of Alphabet Sweet podcast.
I am your host, Timothy.
[00:01:09] Speaker E: You always just, like, do, like, a dramatic pause for that, like, every time.
[00:01:15] Speaker A: Moving on.
[00:01:17] Speaker E: I I'm your host, Pat.
[00:01:21] Speaker C: You did it wrong too. I'm producer Aaron.
[00:01:24] Speaker E: Oh, see, rock on.
[00:01:26] Speaker A: He's got.
[00:01:28] Speaker E: I'm taking back my position.
No. Co host.
[00:01:36] Speaker A: Uh oh. Uh oh.
[00:01:38] Speaker E: Don't go to sleep.
[00:01:41] Speaker A: So today we are here to talk.
[00:01:43] Speaker C: About what nobody would know because you backed away from the microphone.
[00:01:49] Speaker A: What are we talking about today?
[00:01:50] Speaker E: You tell me.
[00:01:52] Speaker A: I can't pronounce that word.
[00:01:53] Speaker E: Aguadilla.
[00:01:54] Speaker A: Think Aguadia.
[00:01:55] Speaker E: Aguadia.
[00:01:56] Speaker A: Aguadia. Agua dia.
[00:02:00] Speaker C: What if it's Aguadia?
[00:02:02] Speaker E: It could be. I really don't know. It's spelled a G U A D I L L A.
So I have no idea how to pronounce it, but I'm calling it Aguadia.
[00:02:16] Speaker C: It's a quesadilla with water instead of cheese.
[00:02:18] Speaker E: It could be.
And so Aguadia, who does it?
[00:02:25] Speaker C: A rapper named wet Tortilla.
[00:02:29] Speaker A: What?
[00:02:30] Speaker E: The wet tortilla. I think I saw him at concert one time.
No no, no, that mexican fest.
So, mister host, who does this song?
I'm gonna take a nap.
[00:03:03] Speaker A: I'm having a hard time finding my thing on here. It's Eric Leeds, but I know who that is. Oh, well, I'm trying to find the saw. Cause I still haven't been able to find it and click on it, so I don't even know. I'll go. Who know? Where is it? It's not even.
[00:03:21] Speaker E: It is on there. Look at the song. Listen.
[00:03:27] Speaker A: Is it on the regular?
[00:03:28] Speaker E: Yes.
[00:03:29] Speaker A: Ah, that could be why.
Why you sent me out, bro. Didn't you say it was on the.
[00:03:34] Speaker E: No, I did not.
[00:03:35] Speaker A: Are you sure? Somebody told me that.
My brain maybe. Hey, look at there. It's right there.
[00:03:42] Speaker E: There it is.
[00:03:43] Speaker A: Told you. Oh, that's right.
So what do you think?
[00:03:55] Speaker E: What do I think?
[00:03:56] Speaker A: Yeah, tell us the story. Why on Prince Vault, why you click on where it says the name of the song that comes to finish.
[00:04:05] Speaker E: You said tell you the story.
[00:04:06] Speaker A: But I'm.
[00:04:07] Speaker E: Okay, go ahead.
No, finish.
You tell us the story.
[00:04:13] Speaker A: I don't know, Mister Rogers, what does it.
[00:04:17] Speaker E: What happens?
[00:04:18] Speaker A: So you click on it and it comes to something totally different.
[00:04:21] Speaker E: Yeah, it does.
[00:04:23] Speaker A: Now I finish.
[00:04:24] Speaker E: See, now are you finished?
[00:04:25] Speaker A: I am.
[00:04:26] Speaker E: Are you sure?
[00:04:26] Speaker A: Just do it.
[00:04:27] Speaker E: Okay.
[00:04:28] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:04:28] Speaker E: So this is another strange thing, because again, prince doesn't have. Why don't you get rid of that can, please.
[00:04:36] Speaker A: Doesn't it look like it got hard?
[00:04:40] Speaker E: I think you need to.
No, let's remove that.
[00:04:45] Speaker A: Okay?
[00:04:46] Speaker E: Please.
This song, whatever it's called, aguadia, Aguardia, is off Eric Leed's album things left unsaid.
And he gave Prince co writing credit because he used some phrases from the family's song Desiree.
So, because he used the phrases, he gave Prince credit and that's why we're talking about this. That was very mature of him. It was.
This is, to me, that's the way it should go. But other than that, Prince had nothing to do with it. It was a completely Eric song that.
[00:05:36] Speaker C: Is musician integrity at its finest.
[00:05:39] Speaker E: Right? Again, Eric Leeds, like one of the best. Just all around dude.
[00:05:48] Speaker A: I think he's the best.
[00:05:50] Speaker E: You know what he does?
Well, I mean, he. And he does so much. He plays, he produces, he mixes, he demi. And now look, like Aaron said, it's integrity at its finest. He used a few phrases from a song Prince wrote and gave Prince co writing credit.
So that's really the only reason that we can even talk about this song is because Prince really had zero input other than Eric Leeds saying, hey, I like those phrases. I'm going to use them.
[00:06:23] Speaker C: Unless, of course, Prince knew about it and forced him to do it.
[00:06:26] Speaker E: No, he did not. We know that for a fact, I'm pretty sure, because. So Eric Leeds, at this time in Prince's career was like, huge. He was majorly involved in tons of things. And Prince loved the dude, trusted him with everything and had him working on so much and kind of gave Eric just free run to do a lot of what he wanted to do. He would like, remember when we were doing all those madhouse songs? He handed them off to Eric and said, here, do your thing. So I would be willing to bet that Eric just was he. Princess, I got, you know, we'll do your album and do what you want to do. And he's. He said, I'm gonna use some of this stuff. And Prince proudly said, go for it.
He just. He liked Eric that much and trusted him. And I don't think to this day, I don't recall ever there being a bad, bad blood between Prince and Eric.
[00:07:27] Speaker A: Right.
[00:07:27] Speaker E: I think their relationship was good start to finish. If there ever was bad blood, then I never heard about it, so I could be wrong. But, yeah, as far as I know, they were always.
I mean, come on, Eric was in the family, so he would know what the family songs were, you know.
So he probably is like, oh, I'm gonna write a song with these lyrics.
Yes. I mean, it's a good song. I like it. But then again, I like Eric Leeds. It's. It's the typical jazz music.
It's not quite madhouse, but it's. It's got spots in it where you're like. You hear madhouse.
You know. It's not the. The jazz funk that madhouse is.
[00:08:23] Speaker A: I think it's like, real mellow. Like.
[00:08:26] Speaker E: Yeah, it's mellow.
[00:08:27] Speaker A: I don't know. Sit back, kick back. You know, drink a beer and just.
[00:08:32] Speaker E: Eat some dog biscuits.
[00:08:34] Speaker A: And eat some dog biscuits, you know, some dog cookies. It's a good. It's good.
[00:08:41] Speaker E: I think most of Eric's music is good for that, though.
Yes, definitely. Imagine this. It's a nice summer night, you know, 75 degrees out, you got the campfire going.
You got your drink, your beverage of choice.
You got some s'mores or something or a bowl of popcorn. And you're just sitting out there under the stars and you have Eric Leeds playing.
[00:09:11] Speaker A: That would rock, man.
[00:09:12] Speaker E: Is that not a good Friday night?
[00:09:15] Speaker A: That would rock. Yes.
Oh, yeah.
[00:09:19] Speaker E: And I'm not talking the madhouse Eric Leeds. I'm talking Eric Leeds. Eric Leeds.
You know, times squared and things left unsaid, those objects.
[00:09:26] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:09:27] Speaker E: And just let it. Let it go, man. Dang.
[00:09:32] Speaker A: Saturday.
[00:09:33] Speaker E: It'd be a good Saturday night, too.
[00:09:35] Speaker A: Think so? Yeah, I might try that. Go outside and campfire it.
[00:09:40] Speaker E: Yeah, and just have some. Eric playing.
[00:09:43] Speaker A: Some Eric playing with my RC.
[00:09:45] Speaker E: There you go.
[00:09:46] Speaker A: Good to go.
[00:09:47] Speaker E: Just make sure you get your dog biscuits.
[00:09:49] Speaker C: Me and my RC.
[00:09:51] Speaker E: That tastes mighty good to me.
[00:09:53] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:09:55] Speaker E: So, yeah, I enjoyed it. Good song.
[00:09:58] Speaker A: And what I like is they perform live.
[00:10:04] Speaker E: Who?
[00:10:05] Speaker A: I don't know.
This has been performed live, I think, right?
[00:10:11] Speaker E: I doubt it. I doubt. I don't think Eric's ever really been on tour.
But I know he's performed at, like, special events. And usually he's doing, like, print stuff or family stuff. I don't think he does much of his own.
I could be wrong, so.
But, yeah, just a great song.
[00:10:39] Speaker A: Did you go over that?
[00:10:41] Speaker E: Did I go over what? Just bring it up.
[00:10:42] Speaker A: The earlier version.
[00:10:45] Speaker E: I did not talk about an earlier version.
[00:10:48] Speaker A: It's titled Porto. What?
[00:10:53] Speaker E: The Portofino?
[00:10:54] Speaker A: Yeah. There you go.
[00:11:01] Speaker E: It was considered for his Times Squared album. Yeah.
[00:11:05] Speaker A: Unclear though, if it had desire references.
[00:11:11] Speaker E: Yeah.
[00:11:13] Speaker A: If it didn't, I mean, it'd be kind of cool, though.
[00:11:17] Speaker E: Yeah. But how are we going to find out? Because will we ever find Portofino?
I mean, it's not like there's a lot of Eric Leeds bootlegs out there.
[00:11:26] Speaker C: It's a road in Italy, if I'm.
[00:11:28] Speaker E: If I remember correctly, Portofino or Agua Dia or both.
But yeah. Good song.
[00:11:43] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:11:45] Speaker C: I don't have a water filled tortilla, but I do have snack time.
[00:11:50] Speaker A: Whoa.

[00:13:38] Speaker A: I'm making up for all the times I couldn't remember.
[00:13:41] Speaker E: I couldn't remember, couldn't remember the name. What do we got?
[00:13:44] Speaker A: I'm getting it right.
[00:13:50] Speaker E: We have new sweet and salty bugles.
Caramel flavored.
You know how long it's been since I've had a bugle?
[00:14:05] Speaker A: Really?
[00:14:08] Speaker E: It was probably high school.
[00:14:11] Speaker A: Oh, wow. Dude.
[00:14:13] Speaker C: What is wrong?
[00:14:13] Speaker A: Some of you bugles are good.
[00:14:15] Speaker E: After high school, I'm gonna have some bugles.
[00:14:20] Speaker A: I tell you, they're. I think it's their cheddar ones or whatever. I don't care for those.
Those are like horrible.
[00:14:34] Speaker E: So there you go again. You take a handful and you're probably only gonna eat one, and then you'll.
[00:14:38] Speaker A: Be like, you complain a lot, bro.
[00:14:43] Speaker E: Wow.
[00:14:44] Speaker A: Well, yeah, these are good.
[00:14:52] Speaker C: If you like caramel.
[00:14:54] Speaker E: Yeah, if you like caramel, it's good.
[00:15:00] Speaker A: Caramel.
Caramel.
Should it go through the caramel caramel.
There's a little video for that.
I've seen it.
[00:15:12] Speaker E: These remind me of something else and I can't think of what it is.
[00:15:16] Speaker A: It just reminds me of the popcorn.
[00:15:20] Speaker E: What?
[00:15:21] Speaker A: The popcorn?
[00:15:23] Speaker E: Caramel popcorn?
[00:15:24] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:15:25] Speaker E: Cracker jacks. Yeah, that's what they remind me of. Thank you.
Yeah, they taste like cracker jacks.
[00:15:30] Speaker A: It's good.
[00:15:31] Speaker E: Yeah, I like that.
We actually got a winner.
I'm not really getting a salty. It says sweet and salty.
Am I getting any salty on there at all?
[00:15:48] Speaker A: That's what I'm trying to look for.
[00:15:49] Speaker E: I get a little bit. Did you salty.
[00:15:54] Speaker C: I get a salt flavor.
[00:16:00] Speaker E: I don't know, but that's. That's actually pretty good.
Yeah. So if anyone likes caramel flavored stuff, if you like cracker jacks, especially get these sweet and salty bugles, cuz that's good goo stuff.
[00:16:19] Speaker A: What does mean? Some planted, some you can actually use.
[00:16:23] Speaker C: Snack time to recommend something for once in a while.
[00:16:25] Speaker E: It doesn't happen often, man. Not lately. Lately we've been hitting it. Hitting it bad.
Do you remember those? I think my favorite one of all time so far. Those dill pickle flavored cheese puffs. Do you remember those?
[00:16:42] Speaker C: Very much, yes.
[00:16:44] Speaker E: Those were my favorite snack times. Those are pretty good. Those were amazing.
Supplanted means that it was taken so lines took the place of portofino.
Supplanted means like it was subversed, it was, you know, removed and okay. Substituted with that. Make sense?
[00:17:13] Speaker A: It does.
[00:17:13] Speaker E: Okay.
[00:17:14] Speaker A: Cuz I clicked on it and it brought some weird stuff up.
[00:17:17] Speaker E: Okay.
So anyway, so we had a good song. We had a good snack time.
How often does that happen exactly?
[00:17:29] Speaker A: It's been a while.
[00:17:30] Speaker E: It's been a while now. We have a good day.
[00:17:32] Speaker C: Bye bye.
[00:17:35] Speaker E: Okay, peace.
I'm kidding.
[00:17:38] Speaker C: There's got to be more to say.
[00:17:40] Speaker E: No, we're done.
[00:17:41] Speaker C: No, you're not.
[00:17:42] Speaker E: Oh, you're right. I'm just kidding. Anyway, go. So.
Oh, he's thinking.
