Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: It is now disclaimer time.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: We are here to share Prince's works with the utmost authenticity, clarity and precision. This means there may be situations where the material being discussed may be sensitive or offensive to some. However, we have chosen to discuss his work as it was initially produced. We will not alter any of his original work to suit anyone's comfort, including in our own. This podcast is to celebrate Prince and his works.
[00:00:29] Speaker C: Thank you for your support and understanding.
[00:00:31] Speaker D: Now, on to the show.
[00:00:36] Speaker E: Hello. Welcome to Alphabet Suite podcast for the Prince songbook. There are hundreds of songs to choose from. You have chosen.
[00:00:46] Speaker A: Welcome back to another episode of Alphabet Suite podcast.
I am your host, Timothy.
I was going to say something, but I don't remember what I was going to say.
[00:00:59] Speaker F: And you like to always do this. Dramatic pause.
I am your host, Pat.
[00:01:07] Speaker A: Do you know why I do that?
[00:01:08] Speaker F: No, I don't. Are you trying to think of something funny to say?
[00:01:12] Speaker A: I'm like, screw it. Ain't got time for that, producer.
[00:01:16] Speaker C: Aaron, look, you can use either hand. You can do whatever you want. It's all right in front of you.
[00:01:24] Speaker F: This new studio is going to be amazing when we're done, unless you start banging your head on the soundproofing.
[00:01:31] Speaker A: Well, I got to make sure because my chair is high and I just had it up against her.
[00:01:35] Speaker F: Yeah, don't break it. No, dude, I'm just saying, not try. You got a producer over there.
[00:01:41] Speaker C: I just did all that today, man.
[00:01:45] Speaker A: Thank you.
[00:01:48] Speaker F: Thank you for being the producer.
[00:01:50] Speaker A: Yeah, I appreciate that.
[00:01:51] Speaker C: Thanks for helping with the table.
[00:01:52] Speaker F: Oh, yeah.
So, what are we talking about today?
We're talking about a song.
[00:02:00] Speaker A: We are a million miles. I love you.
[00:02:04] Speaker F: Oh, I love you, too.
[00:02:09] Speaker C: You had me for a second.
We just talked about a million miles. No, we didn't.
[00:02:15] Speaker D: That was a million days.
[00:02:15] Speaker F: Million days.
[00:02:17] Speaker C: Damn it.
[00:02:21] Speaker F: And were the old ones.
[00:02:25] Speaker A: So this is an older song.
[00:02:28] Speaker F: Yeah, but a good one.
[00:02:31] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:02:32] Speaker F: You don't like it, do you? What's your notes say?
[00:02:36] Speaker A: My notes say to let you talk for a few.
[00:02:43] Speaker F: For some reason, I always liked Prince's offshoot bands. And this was on the vanity or the Apollonia six album, and so I always liked the vanity six. The time the Apollonia six, back in the days, in the 80s, his offshoot stuff, the family.
I really enjoyed that stuff.
And what was really cool about it was, I felt. Anyway, when you listen to his associate artists, the music always felt, to me less produced than what he did with his own music.
You know what I mean? It felt a lot simpler, a lot more. It was more raw. Kind of like dirty mind. That was a very raw. You felt almost like you're listening to demos. When you listen to dirty mind, it was just raw music. And when you listen to his offshoot bands, their music was very. Just raw. It was not overproduced. But you listen to his music at the time. And he really had it after Dirty Maya, when he went to controversy and then 1999, everything was really produced, over produced.
But this stuff was never really.
It felt raw to me.
It's a simple. It was like a keyboard, drums, guitar, bass, and then the girls singing.
[00:04:23] Speaker A: Right.
And it was good.
[00:04:26] Speaker F: I enjoyed it. Yeah. So you did like it or not really. Not this one song. Are you just saying the music. That kind of music was good, correct.
[00:04:35] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:04:39] Speaker A: Scroll down there.
Make sure I'm thinking of the right one.
See, you didn't need the mouse.
[00:04:47] Speaker F: It was easier with the mouse, buddy.
[00:04:48] Speaker A: Okay. Yeah.
So I listened to Prince's version.
[00:04:57] Speaker F: Okay.
Yeah.
[00:04:59] Speaker A: And I thought it was okay.
And I then listened again to Apollonius. Okay. And I noticed, I don't know, I guess there was a purpose behind that. I don't know what the purpose would.
[00:05:16] Speaker F: Be, but purpose behind.
You said a purpose behind that.
[00:05:21] Speaker A: A purpose behind this and then meaning.
[00:05:25] Speaker F: I'm going to tell because you said that. A purpose behind. Yes.
[00:05:29] Speaker A: You said there what to do when.
[00:05:30] Speaker F: We had a purpose behind that. So I thought I'm like, they might.
[00:05:36] Speaker A: Have had a purpose behind that? Yes.
[00:05:38] Speaker F: Behind what?
[00:05:39] Speaker A: Behind this.
Okay, dude, you can't go out there, man. He's like my go to guy.
All right, I'm coming out of the booth. There's a different tone of how he sings.
His is more of a higher pitch to where he sings more normal with the Apollonia one, and she's got the higher pitched of the voices.
[00:06:17] Speaker F: But did he? I don't even think he sang on the Apollo one.
[00:06:20] Speaker A: Yes, he did.
[00:06:21] Speaker F: It doesn't say. It's just all instruments.
[00:06:23] Speaker A: He did. Dude, have you listened to the song?
[00:06:26] Speaker F: No, I have never heard this song.
[00:06:30] Speaker A: Play that song, bro.
He sings in that song with that bologna.
[00:06:38] Speaker F: You sure about that?
[00:06:39] Speaker A: Right from the get go, dude.
[00:06:53] Speaker F: Nuts.
[00:06:56] Speaker C: So they're only going to get that.
[00:06:58] Speaker F: If they watch BTS.
[00:07:02] Speaker A: So that's.
[00:07:05] Speaker F: So did you like this song specifically?
You talked a lot about liking that kind of music back then.
[00:07:14] Speaker A: This song here, it was okay.
I know. Back in the day, I liked that song.
[00:07:22] Speaker F: You liked it a lot back in the day.
[00:07:27] Speaker A: But as I got older, we went.
[00:07:32] Speaker F: For the more produced music.
[00:07:34] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:07:36] Speaker F: And that's a weird thing when this came out, even though it was under produced.
Because music hadn't really come as far as it has now in the productions and some of the things they do, it still felt underproduced. It felt like just raw music, which was good.
But now when you listen to it, it almost feels amateurish sometimes.
[00:08:09] Speaker A: For that time, error.
[00:08:10] Speaker F: But for the time, yeah, it worked really well.
So I still like the song.
[00:08:18] Speaker A: Yeah, it's okay.
[00:08:19] Speaker F: I think now I see it as really simple as opposed to back then I thought, it's just not as produced as other things. But now you listen to it, it's like really just simple music.
[00:08:34] Speaker A: Like with sex shooter, and it's all just simple.
[00:08:39] Speaker F: Yeah, but sex shooter had a little more production to it.
Not much, but, yeah, I think if you listen to.
Like I said, you listen to his offshoot acts. And I don't think he really started majorly producing the music until ice cream castle. You listen to the Times ice cream Castle album. That music is.
[00:09:10] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:09:11] Speaker F: That is not simple music. That is produced music.
But you listen to the time. And what time is it, those two albums? And it's very much like apollonia six. Vanity six.
Because when you listen to vanity six, listen to nasty girl. And it's very much three times two equals six. It's very simple music.
[00:09:40] Speaker A: I didn't like that song.
[00:09:42] Speaker F: No.
[00:09:44] Speaker A: While we're on. This ain't got nothing to do with what we talking about.
[00:09:48] Speaker F: What's that?
[00:09:50] Speaker C: Here we go.
[00:09:53] Speaker F: Just have, like, a starter pistol.
[00:09:55] Speaker A: Look, I can't.
Her name slips my mind. The blonde chick, purple Rain.
[00:10:04] Speaker F: Jill Jones.
[00:10:05] Speaker A: Jill Jones?
[00:10:06] Speaker F: Yes.
[00:10:08] Speaker A: I am trying to get into bleaker street.
[00:10:17] Speaker F: 77 Bleaker street.
[00:10:20] Speaker A: What is she screaming about, bro? This would have been a great song. I know.
[00:10:25] Speaker F: Well, what do you mean you're trying to get into it because you want to like this.
[00:10:29] Speaker A: I want to like it. It's a good song. And then she's screaming at everybody. What the hell's wrong with you?
That ruined it. It ruins it. I try to try to figure out why is she yelling?
I feel like she's screaming at somebody. And it drives me crazy. And I can't get past it. I'm like, shut up.
[00:10:52] Speaker F: But you keep trying.
[00:10:53] Speaker A: But because it starts out, it's a good song.
And then she ruins it by screaming. I'm just saying, I hate when people ruin songs, man.
[00:11:04] Speaker F: Yeah.
[00:11:06] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:11:08] Speaker F: Do you need your pen back?
[00:11:10] Speaker A: No.
[00:11:10] Speaker C: That was aggressive.
[00:11:11] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:11:12] Speaker F: I'm sorry.
[00:11:12] Speaker C: You need a hug, maybe.
[00:11:15] Speaker A: Not from Jill Jones, though. No, she want to scream about it.
[00:11:19] Speaker C: How about from co host Pat.
[00:11:21] Speaker A: Do you need a hug or hug me?
[00:11:23] Speaker C: Do it right now.
[00:11:24] Speaker F: I'll come give you a hug.
[00:11:25] Speaker A: Okay?
[00:11:25] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:11:26] Speaker C: Don't trip over the cable.
[00:11:27] Speaker A: Look, I ain't getting up because I'm my fault.
[00:11:31] Speaker F: You need a hug?
[00:11:33] Speaker A: Hell yeah.
[00:11:35] Speaker F: You know I love you.
[00:11:37] Speaker A: Hell yeah.
[00:11:40] Speaker C: We better now. Even if I'm good, I am surrounded by hardware right now.
[00:11:45] Speaker A: I love all.
[00:11:46] Speaker F: You all want to hug? Come here.
[00:11:51] Speaker A: Watch your stomach now.
I love you all. Even if you all were a million miles.
[00:11:57] Speaker F: I love you a million miles.
Hold on.
[00:12:04] Speaker A: Just chill.

[00:13:50] Speaker F: You don't want to miss this before we do. Snack time.
You saw what happened last time. You gave him a bag.
[00:14:02] Speaker C: Why do you think I did it this time?
[00:14:05] Speaker F: You give him another bag.
[00:14:07] Speaker C: And I gave you the tube.
[00:14:09] Speaker F: And you gave me the tube.
So what are we snack timing today? Mr. Tim?
[00:14:15] Speaker A: I got this today. Luck.
Today is new. I don't know how new it is.
[00:14:22] Speaker C: But Doritos Dina mite.
[00:14:26] Speaker F: What? Thank you, dynamite.
[00:14:29] Speaker C: I don't know.
[00:14:33] Speaker F: Dina mita sticks.
[00:14:36] Speaker C: I was saying Dina mite, as in, like the kids cartoon where they're saying dynamite.
[00:14:40] Speaker F: Oh, that could be what it is.
[00:14:44] Speaker C: No, I think that might be dynamite in Spanish. Dinamita, maybe.
I'm not fluent in any language other than American English.
[00:14:57] Speaker A: New Doritos, hot honey, mustard.
[00:15:00] Speaker F: Hot honey.
[00:15:00] Speaker C: They combined two weird flavors. We've already had hot honey and hot mustard into weird Dorito sticks. Okay, this one's going to be rough, y'all.
[00:15:11] Speaker F: Yeah, I'm not looking forward to this one.
[00:15:13] Speaker A: Wow, look at that expiration date there.
[00:15:24] Speaker C: 2020.
[00:15:26] Speaker F: What about it?
[00:15:28] Speaker A: We're like a week away from that expiration date.
[00:15:35] Speaker F: It's just best buy.
[00:15:37] Speaker A: I understand that.
[00:15:38] Speaker C: Not a sponsor.
[00:15:38] Speaker F: It's not like on January 16, this is going to go bad.
[00:15:42] Speaker A: If this was at my house on January 17, it'd go in the garbage.
[00:15:47] Speaker F: Oh, you are horrible.
[00:15:48] Speaker A: I am, bro. You know what?
[00:15:52] Speaker C: That's just why they need to pull it off the shelf.
[00:15:56] Speaker A: Should have been on the shelf. Not as long. Nobody wanted them. That's why they sat there and sat there until some dummy like me maybe picked them up. I don't know. I hate honey.
[00:16:09] Speaker F: Look, I ate some weird, funky cheesesteak.
What? Beef stick.
Whoa. That's a mustard smell.
[00:16:19] Speaker C: Oh, boy.
[00:16:23] Speaker A: Mustard ones?
[00:16:25] Speaker C: Yeah, the hot mustard Doritos that you sucked all the powder off of.
[00:16:30] Speaker A: Powder.
And they ditched the chips because the Doritos ruined it.
[00:16:35] Speaker F: Man, it looked like french fries.
[00:16:39] Speaker A: Oh, they do.
[00:16:40] Speaker F: They look like french fries.
[00:16:42] Speaker C: Okay.
Yeah, no, I thought they were going to come out red. Like flaming hot. I was a little worried.
[00:16:52] Speaker A: God, that stinks.
[00:16:54] Speaker F: Yeah, that's definitely some mustard.
[00:16:56] Speaker C: Maybe I can smell something.
[00:16:57] Speaker F: Finally.
[00:16:58] Speaker A: Okay, hold on. I'm coming.
[00:17:11] Speaker C: I don't smell much.
[00:17:13] Speaker A: Really?
[00:17:14] Speaker C: It's got fresno chilies on the front.
[00:17:18] Speaker F: Oh, yeah. These are fries.
[00:17:20] Speaker C: Oh, that's a lot harder than a fry.
[00:17:27] Speaker F: You get all the flavors.
[00:17:32] Speaker A: That's gross.
[00:17:33] Speaker F: You get strong. You get the sweet real quick. And then you get the mustard. I mean, like right afterwards. And then you get a little kick on the end.
[00:17:42] Speaker C: Very crunchy.
[00:17:44] Speaker A: This reminds me of the smell.
[00:17:46] Speaker C: Like, is it a smelly smell?
[00:17:48] Speaker F: It smell like a man's locker room.
[00:17:50] Speaker A: Like when you're taking your socks off and your feet stink and you're like.
[00:17:55] Speaker F: Like a man's locker room.
[00:17:56] Speaker A: What the hell? Yeah, that's this gross.
[00:18:03] Speaker C: That is hot.
It doesn't last long, but it's hot.
[00:18:10] Speaker F: You get a kick and then it's gone.
But then flavors come in fast. It goes from sweet to mustard. To hot and just boom, boom, boom.
[00:18:20] Speaker A: Getting horseradish.
[00:18:23] Speaker F: Horseradish?
[00:18:24] Speaker A: Yeah, like the spice of how horse. Really? That's what I get?
[00:18:30] Speaker F: Yeah, horseradish.
[00:18:33] Speaker A: It tastes better than what it smells like.
[00:18:37] Speaker F: I'm not a fan. I'm going to tell you right now, I'm not a fan. I don't like my chips to be super sweet, though.
[00:18:43] Speaker C: Oh, it's got sour cream in it.
[00:18:45] Speaker F: No.
[00:18:46] Speaker C: And it's got food dye. It's got a whole bunch of food dye.
[00:18:49] Speaker F: That means we're all going to die. Cancer.
[00:18:53] Speaker C: Yeah. There's a whole bunch of fake crap in here. That's crazy.
[00:18:56] Speaker F: Yeah. I'm not a fan.
[00:19:00] Speaker C: I'm not sure.
[00:19:05] Speaker F: Because the flavors come at you so fast and furious.
[00:19:08] Speaker A: You know what it's missing? Salt.
[00:19:10] Speaker C: Yeah, I knew you were going to say that.
[00:19:13] Speaker A: It is, though, right? My only one that does not taste any kind of salt whatsoever on this trip.
[00:19:19] Speaker F: I got a little bit. Not much.
When the mustard comes in, you'll taste vinegar and salt with it.
Right after that sweetness, you'll get it.
[00:19:29] Speaker A: You ain't tasting mustard, bro. You tasting like grape papuan.
[00:19:35] Speaker F: Is that why you sucked all the flavoring off them chips, because they were.
Yeah, I'm thinking probably.
[00:19:48] Speaker C: I think it's because it's not hot.
[00:19:50] Speaker D: Honey and hot mustard.
[00:19:51] Speaker C: It's honey mustard, but hot honey.
[00:19:55] Speaker F: Honey mustard.
[00:19:56] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:20:00] Speaker F: That looks like he was going to throw up.
[00:20:02] Speaker A: Did you get the drill in? Coming out of my mouth.
I didn't see the drill.
[00:20:07] Speaker F: I just saw you go, oh, shit.
[00:20:09] Speaker A: I mean, shoot, he's going to get a close up of that. Now.
[00:20:15] Speaker C: Thinking of it as hot honey mustard, now makes sense.
[00:20:19] Speaker F: Okay, so just because you think of.
[00:20:22] Speaker C: It, because the flavors make sense, but.
[00:20:25] Speaker F: It tastes the same.
[00:20:26] Speaker C: It does, but now it makes sense.
[00:20:28] Speaker F: So now you like it?
[00:20:29] Speaker C: I didn't say I liked it.
[00:20:30] Speaker F: Well, you said before.
[00:20:31] Speaker C: I said it's okay.
[00:20:34] Speaker A: It's like talking to you, man.
I can't win. It's contagious.
I don't know.
[00:20:47] Speaker F: I'm not a fan of that one. No, I think you should try another one. No, I had, like, six.
[00:20:53] Speaker A: Did you? Okay.
[00:20:54] Speaker F: Yeah. Not a fan.
[00:20:56] Speaker C: This one's got a lot of powder on it. I'm going to try it.
No, just more painful.
[00:21:07] Speaker F: Looks to have been on camera.
I don't think I've ever seen his face contort like that.
Yeah, not a fan.
[00:21:18] Speaker C: It's not even a tasty heat. It's just pain.
[00:21:20] Speaker F: Yeah, but it's quick and then it's gone.
[00:21:24] Speaker C: Yeah, but it hurts real bad, real fast.
Now we're going to get comments about you all bunch of pussies.
[00:21:32] Speaker F: I've admitted from the day one I've got a wussy mouth, man. I typically. You typically don't.
[00:21:39] Speaker C: At least not to your level.
[00:21:43] Speaker F: Anyway. So there was no covers and no samples that I could find anything. There's three versions. There's the Apollonia six version to this song. There's the prince version to this song. And then supposedly there's another prince version that fades out. But I can't find that version on my.
[00:22:04] Speaker A: Really.
[00:22:05] Speaker D: So what we do is we take.
[00:22:06] Speaker F: The normal one and just fade it out.
[00:22:08] Speaker C: Just fade it out.
[00:22:09] Speaker A: There we go.
[00:22:09] Speaker F: Well, but I don't know because it says fade out edit. So was there more to that? Did he edit it in a different.
[00:22:16] Speaker C: Way when there was a timestamp?
[00:22:18] Speaker F: There's no timestamp because these are unreleased.
[00:22:25] Speaker C: And of course you're not going to remember what your files say.
You said you have them.
[00:22:31] Speaker F: Well, but what do you mean? It's like 314 was the song length. That's your timestamp for the prince version. 311. Is it 311?
[00:22:44] Speaker C: We did that one already.
[00:22:47] Speaker A: I think it was 311, though.
[00:22:49] Speaker F: Okay, so it was like a little over three minutes.
But the Apollonia version is almost six minutes long.
[00:22:56] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:22:58] Speaker F: So I don't know what the fade out version, because like I said, when it's unreleased, no one knows.
[00:23:05] Speaker C: So somebody does.
[00:23:07] Speaker F: Yeah, I'm sure somebody knows.
[00:23:08] Speaker C: But I liked it.
[00:23:09] Speaker F: It was a good song. But like I said, I like the early prince related artists.
[00:23:16] Speaker A: What about Giorgio?
[00:23:19] Speaker F: I love Giorgio.
[00:23:20] Speaker A: No, I'm saying, like, what about him back in the early days?
It wasn't as produced.
[00:23:32] Speaker F: Giorgio think.
[00:23:33] Speaker A: Yeah, first CD.
[00:23:36] Speaker F: Yeah, because that was the one with sex appeal and Tina Cherry. They were very well produced. He did it all himself.
So that's too bad. Him and prince didn't get to well, because Prince. The story I always heard from multiple sources was that prince wanted to sign him, but Prince wanted to do the control of it all. And he was like, no, well, he wanted control himself. Right. And he did. And Giorgio. I wish Giorgio kept making music. He was amazing.
[00:24:10] Speaker A: He could have been bigger.
[00:24:13] Speaker F: Giorgio did not have promotion.
Had Giorgio had promotion. His music is amazing.
[00:24:20] Speaker A: It is.
[00:24:21] Speaker F: So go out and listen to Giorgio.
[00:24:27] Speaker A: I like Giorgio.
[00:24:28] Speaker F: Giorgio Alantini, he just goes by Giorgio, though.
He's got three albums out, and that's it. And they're all amazing.
[00:24:37] Speaker A: That sucks.
[00:24:38] Speaker F: Yeah.
Anyway, so Apollo six, it was good.
So I think that's all the damage we can do for this episode.
[00:24:51] Speaker A: Okay?
[00:24:52] Speaker F: What do you think?
[00:24:53] Speaker A: Yeah. I have nothing left.
[00:24:55] Speaker F: So until next time, people.
[00:24:57] Speaker D: Peace.
[00:24:58] Speaker A: Peace.
[00:25:08] Speaker D: This has been a Tatanka Enterprises production.
