[00:00:00] Speaker A: It is now disclaimer time. [00:00:02] Speaker B: We are here to share Prince's works with the utmost authenticity, clarity and precision. This means there may be situations where the material being discussed may be sensitive or offensive to some. However, we have chosen to discuss his work as it was initially produced. We will not alter any of his original work to suit anyone's comfort, including in our own. This podcast is to celebrate Prince and his works. [00:00:29] Speaker C: Thank you for your support and understanding. Now, on to the show. [00:00:36] Speaker D: Hello. Welcome to Alphabet Suite podcast for the Prince songbook. There are hundreds of songs to choose from. You have chosen a man called Jesus. [00:00:45] Speaker A: Welcome back to another episode of Alphabet Suite podcast. I am your host, Timothy. [00:00:56] Speaker E: Happy New year, everybody. [00:00:57] Speaker A: Why you gotta do that? [00:00:58] Speaker E: I'm your co host, Pat. Because it's the new year, man. [00:01:01] Speaker A: But you gotta. [00:01:01] Speaker E: Like what? [00:01:03] Speaker A: I had something cool going there, and then you just had to go above. Okay, forget new year, sir. [00:01:08] Speaker E: Well, happy New year to you, too. [00:01:09] Speaker A: Thank you. [00:01:10] Speaker F: And check out my new studio. I'm producer Aaron. [00:01:13] Speaker E: Happy New year. Rock on. So, yes, as you can see, we did miss a week because of the holidays, but I don't think they might. During that time, we have remodeled our studio. [00:01:31] Speaker F: It's still not done? [00:01:33] Speaker E: No, it's not done, but it's now looking more like a studio. Yeah, buddy, we're getting there. We're almost like. [00:01:42] Speaker F: You can touch. [00:01:43] Speaker A: I know. It's like 3d stuff. [00:01:45] Speaker F: Yeah. [00:01:46] Speaker A: Does that look cool on the. [00:01:49] Speaker F: It's mostly just black. Is it need to adjust the lights, too. Your face isn't lit up too well, but it's okay. [00:01:55] Speaker E: Yeah. What about mine? [00:01:57] Speaker F: Yours is fine. [00:01:57] Speaker A: Okay. [00:01:58] Speaker E: Do we need to adjust? [00:02:00] Speaker F: Don't do it right now. [00:02:01] Speaker E: Okay? [00:02:01] Speaker F: We'll be fine. [00:02:02] Speaker A: Yes. [00:02:03] Speaker F: Next episode. [00:02:03] Speaker E: Next episode. [00:02:04] Speaker A: I look a little darker. [00:02:05] Speaker F: Yeah, you can see Tim, because my kids. [00:02:07] Speaker E: Your kids are half mixed. I was going to do that one. [00:02:10] Speaker A: Again, but I want to go there again. [00:02:12] Speaker E: So anyway, happy New year, everyone. [00:02:16] Speaker A: Yes. [00:02:18] Speaker E: You're still throwing pens. Some things change, some things don't. [00:02:22] Speaker A: See this, people, is why we got the new table. [00:02:26] Speaker E: Isn't it cool? [00:02:27] Speaker A: Yes, very cool. [00:02:28] Speaker E: And we're not even done. [00:02:29] Speaker A: And we're separated because he was tired of me throwing the pin at him. [00:02:33] Speaker E: Oh, like you ain't going to make it across the table. [00:02:36] Speaker F: Your mic stand is also a lot easier to adjust now, too. [00:02:38] Speaker A: It is. [00:02:39] Speaker F: You just have one knob up and down. [00:02:41] Speaker E: Do your knob up and down. One knob up and down. [00:02:47] Speaker A: Hey, you're on the right podcast. [00:02:51] Speaker F: And then you can angle it. [00:02:52] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:02:54] Speaker E: So now he's going to play with it on air. [00:02:56] Speaker F: I mean, he's going to do it when we get the boobs anyways. [00:02:59] Speaker E: Yeah, get the who? [00:03:00] Speaker A: Exactly. [00:03:00] Speaker E: You'll see the boobs. [00:03:02] Speaker A: Boobies. [00:03:03] Speaker E: The boobies for the knobs to go up and down. This is going in the wrong direction for the song we're talking about. [00:03:12] Speaker A: So to get back on track, we are doing. No, we're not doing. We're talking today about a man called Jesus. That's right. [00:03:25] Speaker E: You made it sound like we're going to be giving a sermon. We're going to be talking about a man called Jesus. [00:03:33] Speaker F: And this show is transitioning. [00:03:38] Speaker A: And this is. [00:03:39] Speaker E: It's a song Mavis Staples and I. [00:03:43] Speaker A: Believe that was prince in the singing with. [00:03:47] Speaker E: Well, and so this song, a man called Jesus, was actually written for Cat. [00:03:57] Speaker A: I can't picture it. [00:03:58] Speaker E: There is a version of the song that I do not have. At least, I haven't been able to find it yet, however. [00:04:09] Speaker A: Oh, I see it. [00:04:10] Speaker E: Yeah. You see in the notes. So the cat version, I may have and I may not. For some reason, my music drive is blank. I don't know if it crashed or if I accidentally screwed. Because I have backups. I always back everything up. [00:04:31] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:04:32] Speaker E: So I have my main drive and then I have my backup drive, and my main drive I have with me at work. [00:04:43] Speaker A: Okay. [00:04:43] Speaker E: And my backup drive is at home. [00:04:46] Speaker A: Which one is it that. [00:04:48] Speaker E: The backup drive, which is at home, which is where I do the music. All this music stuff, it's blank. So I got to bring my drive home from work and back that back up. So. Yeah, I didn't have a chance to really dig into to see if we have the cat version of this song. My understanding from everything I've researched, though, the only difference is the vocals. Everything I see, it looks like the music is the same because there's also a version before the horn or overt dubs. [00:05:27] Speaker A: Yeah. Okay. [00:05:28] Speaker E: So that's the only versions I could find anywhere. There's no samples, no covers known anything. So, yeah, there you have that. [00:05:42] Speaker A: I can picture cat rapping because I've heard her rap. [00:05:47] Speaker E: Yes. [00:05:48] Speaker A: I also see her dance. I don't see her. [00:05:54] Speaker E: You don't see her rapping about Jesus? No. Well, and here's the thing, though. This is a rap song. This is a Mavis Staples rap song. And Mavis actually raps quite well on this. It's not a slow Beatra, it's a fast song. You know what I mean? [00:06:17] Speaker A: Yes. Like jugged. [00:06:20] Speaker E: Yes. [00:06:21] Speaker A: Okay. This is one of the first times we heard Prince rap. [00:06:25] Speaker E: Correct. [00:06:26] Speaker A: Okay. Mavis Staples and Prince have their own unique way of rapping. [00:06:31] Speaker E: They do. [00:06:32] Speaker A: It's the same flow. Flow as each other. [00:06:36] Speaker E: You think so? [00:06:36] Speaker A: Yeah, I think so. Yeah. [00:06:38] Speaker E: So who got it from who? [00:06:40] Speaker A: Well, she's older. [00:06:41] Speaker E: Well. And this song actually came first. This is from 88. [00:06:48] Speaker A: Really? [00:06:49] Speaker E: Jughead came about in the 90s. [00:06:51] Speaker A: What? [00:06:52] Speaker E: 92? 91. 92 is when the campaign. So this is from 88? Yeah. [00:07:00] Speaker A: Pretty wild. [00:07:01] Speaker E: But it wasn't put on Mavis's album until 92. [00:07:08] Speaker A: I don't know why that was. [00:07:10] Speaker E: I don't know. So he had it set and ready and Kat recorded it with Kat in 88. But then when Cat left to go work with a producer in England or something, she actually left him to go work with someone else. So they scrapped her album. He pulled this out for Mavis to put on her album, which I'm trying to think, what was Prince's mindset where he sees Mavis Staples, who's this very soulful R B singer, and he's like, let me get you a rap song. How does that thought process flow? [00:07:54] Speaker A: Right. [00:07:54] Speaker E: You know what I mean? But she did it really well. The music's really. [00:08:04] Speaker A: I like Navy Staples. [00:08:06] Speaker E: Oh, I do, too. Amazing voice. [00:08:09] Speaker A: It was different. Not that I don't like it, it's just I've never heard her rap. Yeah, that was just wild to me. [00:08:18] Speaker E: And like I said, it's a very fast boom boom. I really like the song. I do. I don't think you're ever going to hear it on, like, a christian radio station. [00:08:35] Speaker A: Maybe not. Well, you never know. They'd be playing. [00:08:42] Speaker E: Because I listen, being a Christian myself, I listen to christian radio. And the one problem I have with. I shouldn't say the one. A problem I have with christian radio, they only play christian artists. They don't play songs about God from artists that are not christian artists. Okay, so you would not hear this on a christian radio station, even though it is a very good song and is very well written about God and about Jesus. [00:09:14] Speaker A: So you wouldn't hear this, but you would hear Kirk Franklin. [00:09:19] Speaker E: Correct. Kirk Franklin is a christian artist. [00:09:25] Speaker A: Yeah. Was it stomp? I want to stomp on him. I can't do that, dude. I'm sorry. I've tried. [00:09:41] Speaker E: Where's Tony when you need to? [00:09:44] Speaker A: I don't know. So anyway. Yeah, Candy Dolpher was also saxophone overdubs on that. [00:09:51] Speaker E: She was. Yeah. So, all right, so now we're talking saxophone candy dolpher or Eric Leeds? [00:10:00] Speaker A: Eric Leeds all day. [00:10:01] Speaker E: Really? [00:10:02] Speaker A: Yeah. I like Candy Dolpher she's good. But she's no Eric Leeds, bro. They ain't even in the same class. Come on. That's like. Nevermind. [00:10:13] Speaker E: It's like something. I don't know what, but it's like something. [00:10:16] Speaker A: It's like saying, candy Dolpher is okay. I like her. [00:10:24] Speaker E: It's like saying, why don't we just say that Candy Dolpher is okay. [00:10:28] Speaker A: She's good. I like Candy Dolphin. [00:10:30] Speaker E: I like Candy Dolpher. [00:10:32] Speaker A: Yeah, me, too. Can't she sing, too? [00:10:35] Speaker E: I've never heard her sing. I know. She's prettier than Eric Leeds. [00:10:39] Speaker A: Oh, no, I've seen Eric Leeds with that poofy hair and he's hey, baby. [00:10:47] Speaker E: So, yes, it's a good song. It's a good christian rap song. [00:10:52] Speaker A: So Sheila E is on the cat's version. [00:10:56] Speaker E: She's on both versions. Because background. Okay, I see right down here. So everything is the same. He didn't even really change the. He pulled the music out and just replaced the. [00:11:10] Speaker A: Was. [00:11:10] Speaker E: And then. Oh, he also handed it off to Ricky Peterson to kind of produce it a little more. Okay, well, you give me that look. [00:11:21] Speaker A: Who is that? [00:11:22] Speaker E: That's St. Paul's brother. [00:11:23] Speaker A: Oh. [00:11:25] Speaker E: So he gave it to him and had him do a little more production on it. But he did not rerecord the music. [00:11:31] Speaker A: Because it was that good. [00:11:33] Speaker E: Yeah, because he had it ready to go for cat. And you can hear when you listen to this song, it was done in 88, and 88 was right there when he was doing love sexy, and then 89 was Batman. [00:11:52] Speaker A: Right. [00:11:52] Speaker E: This song, when you listen to this song, you can hear almost like this was done during transition because you can hear love sexy in it, but then you can hear Batman in it, too. It was very much a blend of those two albums. [00:12:08] Speaker A: Who heard what trust. [00:12:12] Speaker E: The drum beat was very much trust. [00:12:15] Speaker A: Yeah, and that dang things. [00:12:17] Speaker E: Yeah, that riff that we can't think of. So when you guys hear this song, listen to this song, and there's a riff in it, it's either exactly the same or it's, like, really close to another song. And we just can't. I think we've been listening to so much music lately that it all just kind of blends in together. What did you write in your notes about it? What did I write in my notes about the song? You notice producer Aaron's been really quiet. [00:12:52] Speaker F: I'm researching more studio stuff. [00:12:58] Speaker E: I thought he just wasn't interested in us. [00:13:00] Speaker A: No, let my producer do his thing, bro. He knows he's got this. [00:13:04] Speaker E: He could hear, too. [00:13:05] Speaker A: He's on it, right? [00:13:07] Speaker F: I can kind of hear you. [00:13:09] Speaker E: He can kind of hear. He can kind of hear. You know what? [00:13:17] Speaker F: I can hear. [00:13:19] Speaker E: You hear that sound? What does that mean? It's coming your way. [00:13:25] Speaker A: We need some music for that. [00:13:26] Speaker F: Can you catch? [00:13:27] Speaker A: Yeah, sure can. [00:13:31] Speaker E: Snack time today is brought to you by nobody again. [00:13:38] Speaker F: I don't know about that. [00:13:40] Speaker E: We don't have sponsors yet. [00:13:42] Speaker F: We have partners. [00:13:43] Speaker E: We do. Or did you forget about that already? We have a partner, right? [00:13:48] Speaker F: We have a partner. [00:13:50] Speaker E: So who is our partner? [00:13:52] Speaker A: Tell us. [00:13:53] Speaker E: Who our partner. Tell us today. [00:15:50] Speaker E: Creamy. What is that? Well, creamy dill and cheddar puffs made with real cheese. [00:15:58] Speaker F: So they're pickled Cheetos. [00:15:59] Speaker E: Pickled Cheetos is what these are. Are you ready? [00:16:06] Speaker F: Aye, captain. [00:16:09] Speaker E: There's been, like, a massive influx lately of dill pickle flavored snacks. [00:16:15] Speaker F: Because it's delicious. [00:16:17] Speaker E: Well, I'm just saying it seems weird that I'm 54 years old, man. I haven't had Dill pickle flavored anything in my life other than dill pickles. And now, all of a sudden, my cereal is dill pickle flavored. My milk is dill pickle flavored. [00:16:33] Speaker F: When you think about it, ranch is kind of dill pickle flavored. Well, there's dill in ranch. [00:16:39] Speaker E: Well, but, yeah, it's not dill pickle flavored. [00:16:42] Speaker A: Open them up. [00:16:43] Speaker E: Let's go. Mr. [00:16:44] Speaker A: I'm still thinking about your cereal milk. [00:16:47] Speaker E: I do pickle flavor cereal. [00:16:49] Speaker F: Pickle milk. [00:16:50] Speaker E: All right. [00:16:51] Speaker A: No artificial flavor. [00:17:01] Speaker E: Okay. [00:17:02] Speaker F: Oh, my goodness. [00:17:05] Speaker A: This is why I don't start snack. [00:17:08] Speaker E: Well, don't slide it. [00:17:10] Speaker F: Grab. [00:17:11] Speaker E: Now that you done ripped the bag halfway down the center. [00:17:17] Speaker A: This must be number. [00:17:19] Speaker E: I hope these are good. Producer Aaron. Hey. [00:17:34] Speaker F: My smell is not working today. [00:17:36] Speaker A: I don't smell nothing. You smell pickle? Yeah, I can smell pickle. [00:17:42] Speaker E: I taste pickle, too. Producer Aaron's on, like, his fifth one already. [00:17:58] Speaker F: I like it. [00:18:01] Speaker E: You get pickle right off the bat, and then it goes right to Cheetos, to the cheese. At least mine does. Do you get a different one? [00:18:12] Speaker A: I kind of get cheese and pickle. All the whole thing. [00:18:16] Speaker F: The intensity of the pickle varies by puff. [00:18:22] Speaker E: Definitely. I like them. [00:18:24] Speaker F: Yes. [00:18:26] Speaker A: These are very good. [00:18:27] Speaker E: These are good, man. [00:18:29] Speaker F: It's too bad they're limited time. Yeah, we got these, like, a month ago. [00:18:33] Speaker E: They had them one time when I went there. No matter what that is, they got it one time and then it's gone. [00:18:41] Speaker A: Anybody else getting salt? [00:18:43] Speaker F: Yeah, of course. [00:18:44] Speaker E: Okay. [00:18:45] Speaker A: That one had a lot. [00:18:45] Speaker E: A little bit, didn't it? Yeah. That is really good. [00:18:50] Speaker A: Wow. I'm actually impressed. [00:18:52] Speaker E: Yeah. [00:18:55] Speaker F: I really can't smell anything today. [00:18:57] Speaker E: And we'll never get them again. [00:19:00] Speaker F: Well, I wouldn't say never. [00:19:05] Speaker E: This is what they do. They tease us. [00:19:08] Speaker F: That's why their shows have just got to get popular. So everything we like. That's a couple months old now. And you get the petition of all the people listening and watching to be like, hey, make that snack again. [00:19:18] Speaker E: Make it again. Well, this was a Sam's club thing. Members. Mark. So, Sam's club, if you're listening, bring out. What is it? Creamy. [00:19:29] Speaker F: Creamy dill and cheddar puffs. [00:19:33] Speaker E: Oh, those are good. I like those, man. I like that. Yeah. [00:19:40] Speaker F: Thank you, Castos, for your partnership. [00:19:42] Speaker E: Yes. Thank you. [00:19:44] Speaker A: Thank you. [00:19:45] Speaker E: I'm sure there'll be links in the description below for that. [00:19:48] Speaker F: Of course. [00:19:49] Speaker E: So check them out. What? Okay. [00:19:58] Speaker A: Just saying. [00:19:59] Speaker E: So, are we good? [00:20:01] Speaker A: I'm good, man. [00:20:02] Speaker F: Did I not tell you what happened? [00:20:04] Speaker A: No. [00:20:05] Speaker F: Oh, I will. They already know. They just saw. [00:20:12] Speaker E: What? What? [00:20:14] Speaker F: Y'all are looking at me. See, and this is why I don't want to be in here. We interrupt the flow of the show by y'all getting brain dead and staring at me. [00:20:22] Speaker E: This is why he's going to move out to the producer's booth out there, and we're going to be stuck in the studio, but we're going to get a big old cardboard cut out of producer Aaron that we can stare at. [00:20:34] Speaker F: It's got to be big. I'm fat. [00:20:36] Speaker E: We're all fat. Too many creamy dill pickle and cheddar puffs. [00:20:41] Speaker F: Yeah, I need to stop. [00:20:44] Speaker E: All right. A man called Jesus. [00:20:48] Speaker F: Back to your notes. You're going to say something about your notes. I rudely interrupted you. Snack time. [00:20:55] Speaker A: You're a funny guy. [00:20:56] Speaker E: Okay. Show him your notes. [00:21:04] Speaker A: Just for the illusion. [00:21:06] Speaker E: Yeah, he took no notes. [00:21:09] Speaker A: That's all in my head. [00:21:10] Speaker F: Then you still got notes. [00:21:11] Speaker A: Yes, I do. Come making fun of me. [00:21:14] Speaker E: I'm not making fun of you. I'm just laughing at you. All right, so till next time. Peace. [00:21:21] Speaker A: Peace. [00:21:32] Speaker C: This has been a Tatanka Enterprises production.
